Planning Highly Available, Mission Critical SQL Server Deployments with VMware vSphere

The VMware Experts Database program (MS SQL Server and Oracle editions) invites the specially selected industry Experts to contribute to the breath of VMware industry knowledge by presenting sessions at VMware events to and developing white papers. Often these papers are commissioned by VMware (sometimes jointly with other partners) and in this case partial funding for development of this paper was provided by VMware.

Allan Hirt of SQLHA is a MS Cluster MVP and a member of the VMware Experts Database program and is considered to be one of the worlds foremost experts on SQL Server High Availability. Allan provides the prospective of a 3rd party expert in this field whose core competency is Microsoft SQL Server. This paper which is listed on the VMware BCA homepage for SQL Server describes various different approaches of implementing and deploying High Availability and Disaster Recovery for SQL Server in a vSphere environment. The clear theme is that the innate vSphere HA/DR capabilities are the perfect compliment to the HA/DR features of MS SQL Server.

Alan presented the paper at VMworld US at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas in August 2016 and at the VMware Experts Event in October 2016 in Sofia Bulgaria. He will also be presenting this work in a VMlive session Jan 13, 2017.
