VMworld 2018 Europe Recap: Possible Happened Here

After working hard and partying even harder yesterday—thanks, VMworld Fest—VMworld 2018 Europe Day 3 served as a fitting farewell to our five-day stint in beautiful Barcelona. As a whole, VMworld 2018 Europe offered attendees jam-packed days full of innovation, education, collaboration and fiery passion for the power of technology, its use as a force of good and VMware’s role and self-appointed responsibility to do so and shape the future for the better. VMworld 2018 Europe

The driving theme of VMworld 2018 Europe was that possible begins with you, and there were nearly 13,000 of you here—a record number for VMworld Europe—making possible a reality! By showcasing our latest, most innovative products and technologies, we were thrilled to have so many of you here on a mission to accelerate your enterprise’s journey toward becoming a true software-defined business.

Even though pioneering and achieving the possible is what VMworld 2018 Europe was all about this year, it can be challenging to fit everything into your schedule. Luckily, we’re here to recap some of the biggest highlights to cure your FOMO—just in case anything slipped through the cracks. And if you weren’t able to attend this year, we hope this post inspires you to consider VMworld as a destination next year. With that said, let’s dive in!

VMworld 2018 Europe General Sessions and Showcase Keynotes

VMworld 2018 Europe

Day 1 of VMworld kicked off with “Technology Superpowers,” a general session centered around VMware’s commitment to shaping the future of technology to serve as a force for good. CEO Pat Gelsinger and CTO Ray O’Farrell laid out just how VMware would achieve this, by highlighting our growing footprint in the four biggest tech superpowers of today: cloud, mobile, AI/machine learning and edge/IoT. This segued into some huge announcements, including VMware’s growing partnership with IBM Cloud—complete with a visit from Arvind Krishna—and acquisitions of both Heptio and CloudHealth.

Day 2’s General Session dug into the possibility theme even further with “Pioneers of the Possible.” COO Sanjay Poonen kicked off a conversation about using technology to test the limits of what’s truly possible with a wide variety of VMware customers taking bold steps into digital transformation in order to transform their business and define the future. Following that, CMO Robin Matlock sat down with Martha Lane Fox, founder and executive chair of doteveryone.org.uk, an independent think tank and charity championing responsible technology for a fairer future. Martha’s inspiring, insightful perspective on innovation and inclusivity in the internet industry hit all the right motivational flavor notes for attendees.

Our showcase keynotes also proved to be quite the draw at VMworld 2018 Europe. These hour-long sessions featuring prominent VMware experts explored visionary ideas about the trends, innovations and solutions defining virtualization. This year’s showcase keynotes focused on four business-critical topics: modernizing the data center, integrating public clouds, empowering digital workspaces and transforming networking and security—all hot topics that got attendees talking and energized. If you missed any of the General Sessions or keynotes, you can watch them on-demand any time!

Meeting Experts and Getting Hands-on & Certified

Another main draw for each VMworld is getting the chance to meet subject matter experts in the vCommunity to deepen one’s technological prowess, get an up close and personal look at VMware products through Hands-on Labs (HOLs) and earn your VMware certification credentials. The VMware User Group (VMUG) was also onsite, dropping knowledge on our attendees about the latest programs and giving out prizes and the annual T-shirt, always a VMworld fan favorite.

Making the Fun Times Last

Between all the sessions, labs and learning, attendees also had no shortage of opportunities to relax and have fun at VMworld 2018 Europe. The VMvillage united attendees and served as the unofficial gathering spot for the conferences, with areas like Cloud City, the VMware Champions Lounge, vBrownBag Talks and an area smack dab in the middle of all the action featuring foosball, ping pong, air hockey, arcade games and more.

The Solutions Exchange, chock-full of fantastic partners, hosted both a Welcome Reception and a Hall Crawl, offering attendees the chance to explore all of the amazing booths set up on the VMworld Floor. VMware’s fabulous European-inspired station, in particular, featured the HCI Zone complete with demos and espresso, the industry solutions video screens, several prominent book signings and the VMware Theatre, which featured riveting talks.

And of course, things got pretty kooky at VMworld Fest, the party to end all VMworld parties. After pregaming at the Hall Crawl, attendees flooded into Hall 4.0 to catch headlining band The Kooks, jam out to Rolling Stones cover band Counterfeit Stones and stuff their faces with some delicious food and beverage options. It was definitely the event of the season at VMworld 2018 Europe.
