Until 2016, ransomware attacks were file-based, which meant that a simple signature scan and deletion of the malicious file was sufficient to contain and eradicate the threat. However, the proliferation of fileless attacks, which surged by 1400% in 2022 alone[1], makes detection, containment and recovery far more complex. In this mini-series, we explore what modern ransomware is, why traditional backup-based approaches are no longer enough to protect organizational data, and more importantly, what is actually needed to recover in today’s threat landscape.
