Tech Zone Blog Updates Highlight: Exploring the Latest Innovation in VMware vSAN

With VMware Cloud Platform Tech Zone, you’ll never miss technical guidance on updates and features that keep core technologies —VMware Cloud Foundation, VMware vSphere, and VMware vSAN — top of the class. These solutions help clients manage workloads and optimize resources and storage for the ultimate cloud experience. In the event you did not catch everything from last quarter, here is a quick recap on vSAN technical blogs:

1. Expanded Hardware Compatibility for vSAN Express Storage Architecture

The capabilities found in the vSAN Express Storage Architecture (ESA) have really resonated with our customers.  Better performance, improved efficiency, simplified operations, lower total cost of ownership, and its unique features makes the future clear for vSAN customers and partners.  Since its debut in vSAN 8 and enhancements introduced in vSAN 8 U1, many of our new and existing customers have been enthusiastically moving through introducing the ESA into their environment.

Read this blog to learn how we have collaborated closely with our partners to help deliver even more flexibility and better value to our customers through changes in supported hardware and new system configurations.

2. Automation Improvements using PowerCLI 13.1 with vSAN 8 U1

Automation is huge for creating and managing tailored cloud environments. PowerCLI’s latest 13.1 release helps customers ramp up their automation. The 13.1 update also makes capabilities in vSAN 8 U1 available for scripting and automation. These enhancements ensure that vSAN capabilities are available in a programmatic way so that customers can continue fine-tuning their cloud environments to their needs.

Want to learn more about what PowerCLI 13.1 and vSAN 8 U1 have to offer? Look at this blog post detailing everything you need to know about the power pair.

3. Fault Domains in vSAN ESA

The post “Design and Operation Considerations When Using vSAN Fault Domains” helped many of our customers understand the basic principles of vSAN’s optional Fault Domains feature and offered some guidance in the design and operation of a cluster using this capability. But how do these concepts change in a cluster running vSAN? Read this blog to see some of the similarities and differences when using this feature in a vSAN ESA cluster as opposed to a vSAN cluster using the vSAN Original Storage Architecture (OSA), and why you might want to consider moving to the ESA if you use or are interested in vSAN’s Fault Domain feature.

4. Using vVols or vSAN for vSphere Tanzu Persistent Volumes

VMware vSphere with Tanzu has emerged as a leading platform for running containerized workloads. In this context, vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols) and vSphere vSAN are well suited for managing persistent volumes (PVs) in the VMware Tanzu environment. vVols is a storage management framework that enables granular control over the external storage infrastructure at the VM level. vSAN is VMware’s Hyper-converged storage solution which also provides granular control at the VM level. Read this blog to find out the benefits of using vVols or vSAN for CNS (Container Native Storage) Persistent Volumes in vSphere Tanzu.

5. Fast and Efficient Reads in vSAN Express Storage Architecture

vSAN ESA introduced a new way of processing and storing data with the highest levels of performance and efficiency. Its new data path and underlying data structure achieve this by writing data in a highly optimized way that minimizes I/O amplification and computational effort. Also, it was built to write data to modern NVMe flash devices most efficiently, minimizing garbage collection activities and prolonging endurance. But its ability to store large amounts of data efficiently means that it must also be able to read data quickly and efficiently. Read this blog that closely examines how the vSAN ESA reads data.

6. Yes, you can change things on vSAN Ready Node

In this blog, find out the answers to “Should I change it? “What can I change? Read the blog to find out more.

7. Virtually Speaking: vSAN Express Storage Architecture

Join the Virtually Speaking Podcast to discuss vSAN Express Storage Architecture with Pete Keohler, Staff Technical Marketing Architect, who shares details of the expanded hardware support options for vSAN Express Storage Architecture and learn how many new and existing customers have been enthusiastically moving through the process of introducing vSAN ESA into their environment.
