5G and 6G

The 5G Era: Insights and Best Practices for Building Flexible and Scalable 5G Networks

We all know that 5G is a game changer for virtualizing communications service providers (CSPs). While earlier generations of cellular technology focused simply on faster data speeds and better voice quality, 5G is designed to be a transformational technology that will usher in a new era of Internet-connected devices and applications. With this comes a whole new approach to network architectures and service deployment, requiring more flexible, software-defined systems.

The traditional approach of operating networks in a linear manner no longer works in the 5G era. As 5G networks support a wider range of use cases, they are also becoming more complex and dynamic. This requires CSPs to prioritize resilience and flexibility when transitioning over to 5G – all but ensuring a technological revolution in the design and architecture of modern telco solutions.

The communications industry is tough. Updating capabilities is much like changing the oil in a car when it’s moving. When confronted with new technologies like 5G that will not only completely change an organization’s infrastructure but the way they run their business with it as well, CSPs are carefully evaluating their path toward 5G-required agility. We’ve written a series of articles to help. This series explores best practices and case studies for designing 5G networks and migrating them to the cloud. The road toward virtualization has its challenges, so our intention is to provide a roadmap, share our learnings, and offer guidance.

Heuristics While Designing 5G Core and RAN

CSPs have a long tradition of thoughtful planning—for good reasons. So how can we adapt for the future while prioritizing the unique needs of CSPs? When we embrace the concept that the only constant is change, we can weave flexibility into the planning process of a design project.

In this article, we share a customer case study on O-RAN deployment and offer best practices for staying focused when requirements change. We also highlight several technical heuristics for designing 5G core and O-RAN networks, including service-based architecture, modularization, and automation. Learn how to stay flexible and adaptable as the requirements and goals of 5G technology evolve. Read more about heuristics while designing 5G core and RAN.

Evolving a 5G Core and RAN Design with Changing Requirements

In the second article in our series we elaborate on the earlier customer case study from our first article, this time exploring how to build flexibility into the architecture and design of a 5G core and RAN environment

One of the critical tools in achieving flexibility is the use of Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. We explore the reasoning behind migrating this customer onto a CI/CD platform and showcase how this supported them not only in the initial deployment of new network functions but also in response to changing requirements. It’s a lesson in flexibility, collaboration, and innovation in the face of changing needs of 5G cloud migration. Learn more about evolving a 5G core and RAN design with changing requirements.

Creating Flexibility Within 5G Cloud Migration

In the final piece of our series, we take a deep dive into cloud migration, highlighting the importance of a flexible and incremental approach and offering best practices when dealing with the ambiguity of system architecture within O-RAN projects.

The transition to cloud-based networks requires careful planning and execution. But it also requires CSPs to stay open to different solutions and innovations. So how can we find the balance between an openness toward the unknown and the need for structure? Flexibility is the answer.
