Today, I am pleased to announce that VMware has closed the acquisition of Heptio. I want to officially welcome the entire Heptio team led by Joe Beda and Craig McLuckie to the Cloud Native Apps team at VMware.
Our Mission
It was clear in the lead up to the November 6th announcement (read the VMware to Acquire Heptio press release) that the two companies shared a common mission to advance Kubernetes as an open framework for multi-cloud infrastructure. Together, we will accelerate our efforts to make Kubernetes the standard for customers building and running their applications across clouds.
VMware and Heptio’s shared mission has been reinforced and become more focused as our teams have planned integration of projects, community efforts, organizations and product offerings moving forward. We will work together in expanding contributions to harden and extend upstream Kubernetes as well as advance cloud native technologies alongside the community.
Our Journey
On the product-front, Heptio brings a wealth of expertise and technology to VMware, increasing the depth and breadth of our existing PKS portfolio. The portfolio today includes VMware PKS (a packaged enterprise Kubernetes suite) and VMware Cloud PKS (a Kubernetes multi-cloud service currently in beta). We expect to preserve and extend Heptio’s customer commitment to upstream Kubernetes while developing and delivering new enterprise capabilities for disaster recovery, auditing, diagnostics and traffic delivery. These capabilities will be delivered for customers whether running Kubernetes on vSphere for hybrid cloud or consuming Kubernetes as a service in the public cloud.
The VMware partnership with Pivotal has been and will continue to be a key part of our product journey as we work together to expand our aligned offerings for the benefit of our customers and partners.
Our Commitment
We are committed to Kubernetes—both the technology and the community. Our customers and partners can expect VMware’s extended participation on both fronts. Kubernetes represents the next frontier of infrastructure modernization, and we will be focused on helping customers gain meaningful business value from Kubernetes regardless of where and how they choose to operate it.
If you’re attending KubeCon 2018 in Seattle this week, please drop by both the VMware and Heptio booths to say hello and check out what we’re up to.
