Grafana Labs recently announced that they are relicensing their core projects from Apache 2.0 to Affero General Public License (AGPL) version 3. This is great news for the open source community, since the new license is still Open Source Initiative–approved and adheres to an additional clause in which network access of any AGPL-licensed software counts as a type of distribution. On the flip side, this also has a direct impact on those using platforms that rely heavily on third-party monitoring interfaces, such as Grafana.
For example, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) has already issued a statement warning about potential future removal of third-party dependencies. In the case of Grafana, which is part of the OCP monitoring stack, the instance and dashboards are now read-only with limited metrics. Therefore, current OCP users may feel limited by its capabilities.
