Cloud Management Platform as a Service (CMPaaS)
Revathy Narasimhan, Group Product Line Manager
Alexander Katzman, Product Manager
Cloud computing has enable companies to increase improve their time to market and increase market competitiveness. However, at the same time, companies are challenged on effective ways to support the demand from the business to deliver this technology, manage these cloud resources that spread across multiple public cloud vendors as well as private infrastructure and at the same time understand the cost of delivery of these services. Without a management platform that addresses these challenges holistically, these are all big challenges that can even eliminate the value of the cloud.
In this session we will reveal to you our cloud services that will give you the ability to automate the provisioning, management, monitoring and optimization of your cloud resources whilst at the same time understating the total cost of delivering these services across your hybrid cloud environment. Join us to learn more about these new cloud services, and gain early access by being part of our beta.

Windows App Remoting with Hot-cloned VMs: A disruptive solution for legacy application access.
Narasimha Krishnakumar, Director, Product Management, Desktop Product Management
Rean Griffith, Staff Engineer
For years, published Windows applications have been provided using a terminal services (RDSH) based framework. A new vSphere ‘hotcloning’ technology allows rapid creation of VMs in seconds with full memory sharing between parent and children. This new ‘VMFork’ technology enables lite-weight and cost effective VM containers to be used for application remoting with all the benefits of isolation, performance, and full Desktop OS compatibility desirable for accessing legacy Windows applications. We will delve into special precloning
OS preparation methods that allow pre-launching of applications and even avoidance traditional methods of logging in while maintaining proper security context. We’ll look at the opportunity for cost reduction by avoiding the need for RDS CALS in some cases and achieving better session density on ESX than RDSH based designs. This session explores a new solution for application remoting that offers cost, density, and other user benefits by combining a new platform technology (VMFork) with some creative ‘inside the VM’ methods to achieve a disruptive new approach to Windows application remoting.

VMware vCenter Policy Based Management and Intelligent Placement
Madhup Gulati, Senior Product Line Manager
Join us to learn how vCenter can help unify your infrastructure by aggregating compute, storage and networking from multiple vSphere clusters into ‘virtual data centers’ to create a truly automated Software Defined Data Center. Imagine you have a multi-tier application deployed in your infrastructure and you have various policies governing where it should be running. You may want your web tier to be running on a cheaper hardware and your application tiers to be separated onto different clusters. You may want your database tier to be placed on hosts with Oracle licenses. With vCenter policies, based on tags and profiles, you can now map the right workloads to the right infrastructure through intelligent placement, improve elasticity through on demand scaling and save costs through efficiencies of scale.

VMware vCenter Workload Management [vMotion, VMFork, Content Library]
Mahdi Ben Hamida, Staff Engineer Technical Lead
Uma Chingunde, Senior MTS
With the introduction of several powerful features in vCenter, managing workloads is now easier than ever. You can now store and centrally manage your content such as VM and vApp templates and ISOs in Content Library. Avoid duplicating template management effort across vCenters and sites by synchronizing your content automatically between them. You can also deploy content directly from Content Library on to a host, cluster or a virtual data center. With enhanced vMotion, you can now live migrate your workloads across vCenters and continental distances without any interruption. VMFork adds a powerful tool to your VM management toolkit. With VMFork, you can create a fully ready VM in less than a second. This novel way of cloning eliminates operating system boot time and reduces the resource strain from a VM clone operation. And finally, to complete the VM lifecycle circle, you can capture your running VM as a template back into Content Library with just a click of a button.

Focus Group – SLA-Driven Automated Scaling of Database Resources: Technical Deep Dive
Xiaoyun Zhu, Staff Engineer
Lei Lu, Member of Technical Staff – Distributed Resource Management
Anil Kapur, Product Line Manager
Not all applications support or work well with horizontal scaling. For these applications, specifically databases, we provide vScaleVertical, a technology that allows a virtualized application to meet its service level objective (SLO) by automatically, vertically scaling the resource allocation to the VMs that host the application. This can be done by adjusting at runtime either the vCPU/memory configuration of a VM or the <reservation, limit, shares> settings of a VM. In this session, the VMware engineers will describe how vScaleVertical works, and get your inputs/feedback on how useful it can be for your specific application and automation needs. Attendees should have knowledge of pain points regarding capacity planning, resource provisioning, and daily operations of database applications to ensure satisfactory performance. While open to all participants, database administrators who face these challenges may be particularly well suited to engage in the conversation.

Hybrid DRS: Managing virtual infrastructure spanning private data center and hybrid cloud.
Anne Holler, Principal Engineer
Anil Kapur, Product Line Manager
DRS is widely used to automate placement and ongoing management of a set of VMs running on a set of hosts. Customers are increasingly handling virtual infrastructure that spans multiple datacenters and that includes off-premise assets in the hybrid cloud. They are looking for a version of DRS targeted to this situation. In this session, we will discuss HybridDRS, which can be used to automate the placement of VMs and VMDKs in both their private data centers and vCHS. If you’re a provider, do you have insight into how your IT expenses accrue so you can craft fees to cover them and implement management plans to control them? Do you have an ability to govern the quality of them? Many organizations don’t. But as the popularity of cloud computing grows, so does the importance of managing the cloud’s costs and quality
