vSphere 7.0 U1 Tagging Performance Best Practices

This blog and the paper are based on work by Raju Angani and Maarten Wiggers.

March 1, 2023 update: A version of this paper for vSphere 7.0 U2 is now available.

We are pleased to announce a refresh of our tagging performance best practices technical paper for vSphere 7.0 U1. In this paper, we describe some improvements we have made in 7.0 U1 to improve the performance of various tag-related operations, and we give updated performance data. Briefly,

  • Performance for tag and category creation is improved over vSphere 6.7 U3.
  • Performance for list APIs is improved over vSphere 6.7 U3.
  • Additional pagination-based list API options are available to simplify retrieving associations.

As an example of some of the gains we talk about in the paper, the figure below shows the latency to attach 15 tags to 5,000 VMs in  vSphere 6.7 U3 (where the time linearly increases with the number of tags) vs. 7.0 U1 (where the time is roughly constant).

We encourage you to read the paper to learn more about the improvements in tagging from vSphere 6.7 U3 to 7.0 U1.
