How to Tune Your HPE Servers Performance

By: Lora Johnson

For any IT stack, servers are at the core and a poor performing server can be detrimental to your end users. With the right insight into your servers, you can ensure this is never an issue — gaining the ability to pinpoint problems as they arise and immediately repair before they result in issues like processing delays or, worse, an outage.

To garner enterprise-wide visibility into your HPE Servers, many vRealize Operations customers leverage Blue Medora’s Management Pack for HPE Servers. This management pack offers real-time insight into how your servers are performing, from including access to more than 400 metrics to demonstrating how your relationships are impacting overall performance.

Earlier this week, Blue Medora released a new version of its popular HPE Servers Management Pack for vRealize Operations. The latest version includes support for configuring connections to either HPE Onboard Administrator (OA), or OA and Virtual Connect Manager (VCM), in addition to the existing iLO connection option. It also incorporates new resource kinds and KPIs, such as transmitted/received bits and packets.

In this blog post, I’ll provide insight into how you can tune your HPE Servers performance to improve operations across your IT stack.

See how relationships impact server performance

A slow-running server can impact productivity and even result in an outage if extended too far. Often times, the issues impacting the server may be caused by external factors — without visibility into these, it can be quite the hunt to determine the problems.

The HPE Servers Management Pack from Blue Medora offers visibility into key external relationships, including into the VMware virtual layer. On top of that, customers who use the Cisco Networking Management Pack from Blue Medora can see key relationships between the HPE Interconnect Port and Nexus Switch, so you can drill down to see if a poor performing switch may be causing problem, or if it truly stems from your HPE server.

Eliminate alert storms

Within the industry, one of the toughest challenges comes from mining through alerts. False alerting has created quite the-boy-who-cried-wolf syndrome in the IT industry — when alerts do come through, there are so many of them that it’s challenging to find the ones that matter.

Take back the meaning of your alerts with visibility into key events — like critical health, memory, disk, temperature and power consumption. Ensure you are receiving alerts that matter to your system — and help you figure out what may be driving an increase in CPU usage, high service response time or even unstable bandwidth.

Dig deeper into performance data

Detecting issues quickly and efficiently requires insight into key data points. Within the Blue Medora HPE Servers Management Pack for vRealize Operations, garner this essential visibility with access to more than 400 key performance metrics, including:

  • Blade power consumption
  • Power supply average power output
  • Fan speed
  • Port receives/transmits

On top of that, view these in seven out-of-the-box dashboards to dig into performance — allowing you to track key trends and understand the root-cause of anomalies or issues.

To tune your HPE Servers performance, having visibility into core metrics, alerts and relationships serves as an imperative first step. Enterprise-level visibility helps you dig deeper and ensure that your IT stack performs at optimal levels, across all layers.
