The VMware Learning Zone (VLZ) is your single source for digital training from VMware and much of it is created by our team of Subject Matter Experts (SME). This month we’re spotlighting Robert Thompson. Robert is an exemplary VMware Subject Matter Expert, whose deep knowledge and detailed instruction have provided a great deal of value for VLZ learners. Robert has clearly and systematically presented two Live Webinars and a series of Five-Minute Fix Troubleshooting videos, so that customers can grasp challenging concepts (in both products and certification) with ease. His slide decks and walk-through demos are well thought-out and on-brand, providing engaging guides that aid visual learners. It’s no wonder that his recorded webinars have each earned five-star ratings in the VLZ platform!

What is your background and how did you start in the IT industry?

I am a native of South Georgia and presently a technical instructor by day based in Atlanta and held various IT positions dating back to 1998. Most of my time was spent in the banking and mortgage fields prior to joining AirWatch.

I also hold multiple information technology degrees and have taught collegiate IT courses part time.  Outside of work I enjoy travel, politics and aviation.

What do you think makes for a great online learning experience?

Interaction during class and having a seasoned instructor available in real time to assist with lab exercises.

What is the most desirable facet of belonging to an Education Contributor program?

Continuity from year to year, not just e-mail to e-mail.  Many times students will say “do you know…?” and it’s great to be able to respond “yes, we’ve worked together for this long or that we worked together on this project.”

Why did you get involved in contributing to VMware’s education library?

It is great to keep up with students sometimes years after a class to see how our technology has helped them and see where we can learn and go next.

Fun Fact

Thanks to the efforts of one of our employees, the Veterans@VMware Power of Difference community (POD) has been granted a rare honor. We will be allowed to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery on January 9th, 2019.  This is a unique honor that none of our competitors, nor any other Veteran Employee Resource Group has ever done.
