Hack Away with VMware’s Little IoT Agent (Liota) at ELCE in Berlin

Talk about the Internet of Things (IoT) is everywhere! VMware is taking on IoT, and we invite you to join us on this journey.

liota-hackathonWHAT: VMware is hosting a hackathon around our Little IoT Agent, Liota. Our goal is to introduce developers to the capabilities of the library, to have some fun and to spark some ideas for all the ways in which Liota could be useful in your next project. The nature of this library allows it to be useful for many different kinds of projects, from smart cities all the way to smart cars (and most everything in between). This is a great way to get started for those new to IoT and, of course, those who have already been hacking away. Oh, and did we mention that there’s an awesome prize for the winners of this hackathon?

WHERE: Hosted in Berlin, Germany, at the ELCE on Oct. 10, this is a cannot-miss event for the innovative minds interested in the possibilities of a connected world. If you are planning on attending the ELCE, it’s not too late to register for the Liota Hackathon!

WHEN: Monday, Oct. 10: 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

WHO: Developers, problem solvers, IoT enthusiasts

THE CHALLENGE: “Meet Mr. Robot”

Come meet YuMi, the industrial robot. Use Liota to collect metrics from YuMi, and use it in an innovative manner. Remember: you are only limited by your imagination!

  • Overview of components: Liota, Dell IoT Gateway, ThingWorx, YuMi REST API.
  • Walk through sample programs.
  • Let the coding begin!

Criteria

  • Attendees will be asked to join teams of two to four developers.
  • Each team will collaborate on a Liota program that collects data from the robot and forwards to either ThingWorx or the Manager.
  • Liota programs are written in Python.

Judging & Prizes

  • Liota programs will be judged on innovative use of the metrics and commands available from the YuMi REST API in both the Manager and ThingWorx.
  • Judging will be by representatives from one or more of VMware, ThingWorx, Dell, and ABB
  • Three Galileo development boards will be awarded to the winners of the hackathon.

Want to Learn More?

  • Liota is a software development kit (SDK) and framework that provides developers with a seamless way to move data from devices to data centers. This is a newly innovative way with the ability to perform commands from data-center components. Download the data sheet here
  • This hackathon shows you how to use the three-tier architecture for the IoT, the ‘Things’, IoT Gateways and cloud/data center. See the VMware CTO Blog for a deeper discussion of this topic.

So, come join the fun at Berlin. Hope to see you there!
