This week we are pleased to announce VMware Cloud Director service (CDs) support for managing multi-tenancy or private SDDC services on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) as an Initial Availability. Oracle Cloud VMware Solutions is an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) service, sold and supported by Oracle, verified by VMware, that runs on Oracle hardware in all Oracle data centers, while Cloud Director service is sold and offered as a SaaS service operated by VMware, to VMware Cloud Providers Partners and enterprise customers.
What does this mean to the Partners and Enterprise customers?
Now you can deliver a multi-cloud control plane for infrastructure and applications on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, as well as connect existing on-premises vCenter instances or consider replacing your on-premises Cloud Director appliances.
We already support partners and enterprise customers by delivering a multi-cloud control plane for infrastructure and applications multi-tenancy to VMware Cloud on AWS, Google Cloud VMware Engine and Azure VMware Solution (dedicated enterprise multi-tenancy). Now we are extending our services for enterprise customers to deliver SDDC endpoints in Oracle Cloud VMware Solution using multi-tenancy within their organization, with each internal tenant having their own Organization Virtual Data Center (OVDC).
Communications to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution endpoints from the Cloud Director service are supported by an SSL reverse proxy, the same mechanism that connects VMware Cloud Director service to Azure VMware Solution or Google Cloud VMware Engine and on-premises SDDC endpoints.
This offering will be supported in all the Oracle regions where Oracle Cloud VMware Solution is available.
Note: Before making any design considerations, please ensure that between your chosen Oracle Cloud Region and the nearest Cloud Director service location that the round-trip latency time is within the 150 milliseconds rule.

VMware Cloud Director service provides a consistent user experience over multiple cloud architectures and genuinely delivers on the hybrid cloud promise. Providers that have on-premises VMware SDDC deployments can associate them with the VMware Cloud Director service. This means that customers have a single access point to deploy and deliver all their cloud infrastructure regardless of the endpoint.
Cloud Director service is the SaaS version of Cloud Director on-premises which is already delivering the same high-value infrastructure and application services to VMware hyper-scale partners, VMware Cloud on AWS, Google Cloud VMware Engine, Azure VMware Solution and now to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, as well as on-premises vCenter or Cloud Director endpoints. By doing so, you can multi-tenant these target endpoint infrastructures to provide the right-sized cloud to your end customers to meet their requirements.
But Cloud Director service is not just about multi-tenancy, it is also a service delivery platform with networks, security, storage, application catalogs, extensibility services from a rich partner ecosystem, GPU services and native Tanzu Kubernetes support as well as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and Oracle native service adjacency. For example, Oracle customers can now connect their existing Oracle Cloud Infrastructure environments to a Cloud Director service instance with Oracle Cloud VMware Solution environment and gain the benefits of a VMware and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure in the same region.
Use Cases of the Initial Availability
Use Case 1: Enterprises with Self-Service Capabilities that want Dedicated/Multi-Tenancy
In this use case, the enterprise customer will buy the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution service offered by Oracle, which provides a private cloud that contains VMware vSphere clusters built from dedicated bare metal Oracle Cloud compute instances. Additionally, the enterprise customer will buy the Cloud Director service offering from VMware. Thereafter, the enterprise customer can onboard their internal tenants separated using multi-tenancy.
For Example:
An enterprise customer, Acme Corp, that wants to own all the SDDC endpoint resources without sharing them with any other enterprise customer, has purchased Oracle Cloud VMware Solution and onboarded their different internal tenants. Each tenant will have access to the Cloud Director service to provide them with self-service capabilities. Thereafter Acme Corp can multi-tenant and manage the resources within the organization into multiple departments. For example, they can have one tenant within their organization for all the production applications and can have another tenant within the same organization for all the staging applications.
Use case 2: Cloud Director service for Managed Service Providers with Enterprise Customers for Multi-Tenancy
In this use case, the enterprise customer will buy the Oracle Cloud VMware Solution service offered by Oracle, which provides private clouds that contain VMware vSphere clusters built from dedicated bare-metal Oracle infrastructure. The Managed Service Provider (MSP) will buy the Cloud Director service offering available from VMware. Thereafter, the MSP in this case can onboard the enterprise customer and enable multi-tenancy like the 1st use case.
For Example:
An enterprise customer, Acme Corp, that wants to own all the SDDC endpoint resources without sharing them with any other enterprise customer, has purchased Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. A Managed Service Provider would onboard Acme Corp onto Cloud Director service, thereafter Acme Corp and the MSP can multi-tenant and manage the resources within their organization into multiple departments. For example, they can have one tenant within their organization for all the production applications owned by the IT department and can have another tenant within the same organization for all the applications owned by the DevOps department.
Oracle Cloud VMware Solution with Oracle Database PaaS Services
Oracle Cloud VMware Solution interoperates with OCI native services. Businesses can subscribe to Oracle Database PaaS services and receive the benefit of Database HA/scalability with RAC for the applicable services. Operations teams provision databases on virtual machines with block storage volumes providing cost-efficient cloud database services with a choice of Oracle Database editions. The licensing policy for Oracle products running in virtualized environments has not changed with this announcement. Oracle Database requires all cores in a virtualized environment to be licensed.

Migrating and Protecting Workloads to Cloud Director service on Oracle Cloud VMware Solution
VMware Cloud Director Availability enables migration and Disaster Recovery as a Service in and to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. Customers can drive self-serve one-way warm migration from the on-premises Cloud Director Availability vSphere plugin, or they can run the Cloud Director Availability plugin from the provider managed Cloud Director instance and move workloads into Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. Once in Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, customers can protect their workloads between Oracle Cloud VMware Solution instances or back to on-premises.
