Managing security consistently is a significant challenge for organizations with complex infrastructure. Especially when that infrastructure may include a combination of data centers, edge environments, hybrid clouds, and proprietary hyper-scaler cloud environments.
In our recent podcast, Eric Nielsen and I had the opportunity to speak with Muneyb Minhazuddin, VP of Solutions Marketing at VMware. Muneyb oversees marketing for all of VMware’s solutions – including Cloud, Modern Apps, Security, End User Workspace and Networking – and he gave us an update on how VMware is transforming the way organizations address security in a multi-cloud world.
Intrinsic security – an emerging paradigm
Most large organizations have dozens (if not hundreds) of security products they are leveraging to ensure security in complex on-premises and cloud environments. The use of so many products – each with their own UI, policy engine and operating model – brings a massive amount of operational complexity, making it hard to see the forest for the trees when it comes to an organization’s security posture.
In addition, the use of so many security products can, at best, be characterized as ‘reactive’, as organizations are alerted to suspicious activity after the fact when the damage is already done. Rather than using so many products, which drives up operational costs and complexity, VMware is committed to pioneering a concept called intrinsic security. This approach starts by asking the following fundamental questions:
- What do you need to protect?
- What is the best way to protect it?.
The answer to the first question is apps and data. It turns out, the best way to protect your apps and data is by focusing on a small number of control points across your cloud landscape, then making sure security processes are embedded directly into these control points.
VMware’s approach to intrinsic security
We are on a journey to radically change how organizations ‘do’ IT security, focusing on five specific control points:
- Workloads
- Public cloud resources
- Networks
- End user devices
- End users
Focusing on these five control points allows you to dramatically reduce the number of security technologies needed, which in turn reduces operational costs and complexity. Having security built into the technologies that directly support these control points allows you to be much more proactive in your approach to security, addressing issues before they have impacted the business,not after.
In our podcast on intrinsic security, Muneyb walks us through how VMware is transforming the way organizations address the security of their data and applications in a multi-cloud landscape. He discusses how the recent acquisition of Carbon Black anchors VMware’s capabilities in the area of intrinsic security, as well as how technologies such as NSX, Workspace One, App Defense and Secure State play key roles in our approach to intrinsic security. Muneyb also shares how VMware IT has already adopted the principles of intrinsic security to achieve positive results, including an improved security posture.
