Unlocking VMware Cloud Foundation Enterprise Value: Cloud Field Day 25

Our team recently presented at Cloud Field Day 25, demonstrating how VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) addresses critical enterprise infrastructure challenges. The sessions showcased VCF’s unique capabilities in addressing the global memory shortage, delivering public cloud-inspired networking in private cloud environments, and enabling self-service database provisioning.

Advanced NVMe Memory Tiering

The session opened with Dave Morera, Staff Technical Marketing Architect, presenting on Advanced NVMe Memory Tiering in VCF. Memory represents the most expensive and restrictive bottleneck in modern datacenters, limiting VM density and driving up costs.

Advanced NVMe Memory Tiering addresses this challenge through intelligent hypervisor integration that automates data placement across high-performance and cost-optimized memory tiers. The results speak for themselves: organizations can achieve more than 40% TCO savings while simultaneously improving VM density and resource consumption efficiency. What sets VCF apart is the seamless integration at the hypervisor level. Rather than treating memory as a fixed hardware constraint, VCF transforms it into a dynamic, strategic asset that adapts to workload demands in real time .

Database-as-a-Service Without the Bottlenecks

Eric Gray, Principal Architect for Technical Marketing, demonstrated how VMware Data Services Manager (DSM) eliminates a longstanding pain point: database provisioning bottlenecks. Open-source databases like PostgreSQL and MySQL are in high demand; however, traditional provisioning creates ticket queues, governance gaps, and shadow IT risks.

DSM enables on-demand Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) on VMware Cloud Foundation. The Advanced Service for VCF delivers secure, self-service database deployment while maintaining visibility and control through infrastructure policies and role-based access control (RBAC). The solution automates high availability deployments, read replicas, backups, and point-in-time recovery. This transforms Day 2 operations from a burden into an automated capability. With DSM, development teams gain the agility they need while ensuring infrastructure teams maintain governance and operational control .

Network Services That Match Cloud Agility

The final session featured Dimitri Desmidt, NSX Senior Technical Product Manager, presenting on VCF Networking. Dimitri sought to address a common misconception: that physical fabric VXLAN capabilities eliminate the need for software-defined networking. His presentation, “Why VCF Networking (NSX) Is Essential—Even in a VXLAN World,” made the case for why modern private clouds demand more than basic overlay connectivity.

VCF Networking (NSX) decouples networking from the physical fabric, enabling automated, policy-driven network services that integrate natively with vCenter and VCF Automation. This integration delivers operational simplicity that physical fabrics alone cannot match. A standout capability is Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), which empower developers to instantly provision secure, multi-tenant environments without requiring deep networking expertise. VCF Networking functions as more than an overlay. It is a foundational layer that unlocks agility, operational simplicity, and true cloud operating models inside the modern datacenter .
