Microsoft Says “Get Virtual Now”… but Wait Until 2010 for Live Migration | Virtual Reality
Now you may say, “Yes, Microsoft is late, but I’m ok waiting.” But waiting costs your company real dollars. Look at this simple example: By using VMware VMotion for planned server maintenance in a 150-VM environment you can save almost $60,000 a year in operational costs. If we scaled to a 1000-VM environment, it results in almost $400,000 of cost savings a year. If you use VMotion for more than planned server maintenance, and use it for dynamic load balancing, distributed power management, etc, you’ll save even more!
Live Migration is a Core Virtualization Requirement
To pre-announce live migration – twice – shows that even Microsoft has realized the foundational role that live migration plays in a virtual datacenter. It’s not a “nice-to-have” but a “must-have” capability.

AMEN. This is a slide VMware needed a long time ago to help justify some of the VI Enterprise product pricing. Many people overlook examples like this when comparing the pricing of VMware VI to Brand X. Eventually all of the competition will have their version of hot migration. VMware will need to keep introducing new and innovative time saving features that justify their pricing model. The 3 "pay" editions of VI3 will have to continually evolve as the competition matches their features. I also think that a re-examination of VirtualCenter management server pricing will be in order soon.
