A major transformation is underway in the IT industry. The role of IT is completely changing, and practitioners and IT leaders must lead the disruption rather than wait or follow.
Software as a service (SaaS) has been slowly replacing IT applications that used to be custom-built, operated, and managed by IT. Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), commonly referred to as the public cloud, is moving a lot of the IT infrastructure into the cloud. IT is often getting compared to SaaS and IaaS providers.
No longer are IT teams managing workloads only in their data centers. Now, they are expected to ensure the smooth transition of workloads to and from the cloud while maintaining security. IT is also expected to build tight integration with SaaS applications. This IT transformation is happening whether we like it or not. The issue at hand is whether you react, adapt, or act and lead.
VMware’s IT team is going through the same transformation. As vice president of cloud services and development, I have been a customer of IT before being part of IT. I have met with many customers and witnessed firsthand how industry trends are driving cloud adoption practices worldwide. I look forward to sharing my experiences at VMworld 2017 US in my session “IT Transformation: Data Center to Cloud,” where I will discuss how best to champion the impending IT transformation and how to position yourself more as a value provider and less as a cost center. I will also cover how VMware internally manages the data center, public and private clouds, and SaaS offerings. I look forward to sharing my experiences with you and hope to see you there.
