The VMware Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report 2021 is an annual progress update on VMware Environmental, Social and Governance performance. VMware is at the forefront of providing low-carbon solutions and sustainability to our customers. Our tools and solutions significantly reduce energy costs and the carbon emissions associated with operating a robust digital infrastructure. VMware has been a certified CarbonNeutral® company since 2018. Our operations have been powered 100 percent by renewable energy since 2019. VMware is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions for our supply chain by 2030.
One article from the BBC entitled “Why your internet habits are not as clean as you think” estimates that the Internet emits 1.6 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually in the manufacture and running of digital technologies between all Internet users around the world.” Last year, more than 50 million tons of e-waste was produced and expected to rise by eight percent yearly.
Since 2003, VMware virtualization solutions have prevented 1.2 billion metric tons of carbon emissions from being released into the environment. In addition, the efficiencies associated with server virtualization have promoted the reduction of 142 million servers, resulting in 2.4B MWh less energy consumed. In part, through VMware solutions of server consolidation, the International Energy Agency reports that data center electricity consumption remained flat despite a 12-fold increase in internet traffic and an eight-fold increase in workloads.
Leveraging hybrid cloud solutions can reduce on-premises peak workload infrastructure. Anywhere Workspace solutions help customers transition to a distributed workforce model. Remote workers dramatically reduce energy consumption and minimize pollutants released from commuting and traveling into the environment.

This zero-carbon cloud initiative is possible through renewable energy-powered operations and energy-efficient data centers, helping our customers reduce the environmental impact of their digital infrastructures.
