How VMware Duplicated an On-Premises Experience for the Multi-Cloud

Enterprises have embraced the multi-cloud as being a necessary part of modern business, so much so that it is now integral to every corporate function. Not surprisingly, this paradigm shift continues to dominate in the post-pandemic era of hybrid (on-site, remote) workspaces as the proliferation of new devices, remote workers, and cloud-native apps continues unabated.  

Unfortunately, many aspects of the multi-cloud have not lived up to expectations, and many companies find drawbacks compared to their traditional on-premises solutions—a fact that has not gone unnoticed by remote users. This has presented a catch-22 in which companies must constantly employ cloud services to stay competitive, yet also seek solutions (typically workarounds) that duplicate the experiences remote workers enjoy via on-premises solutions. So far, such solutions have achieved only mixed results. 

These issues came to a head for VMware IT teams when we set out to implement our first multi-cloud solution for the SaaS and subscription commerce (SSC) identity services platform. The ideal solution was to employ VMware Tanzu® Kubernetes Grid™, VMware Tanzu® Observability™ by Wavefront®. VMware NSX® Advanced Load Balancer™, VMware Aria Operations™ for Networks, VMware SD-WAN™ and VMware Aria Operations™ for Logs. Now, we can duplicate all the advantages of on-premises in a multi-cloud environment. 

Using this VMware multi-cloud solution translates to a significant improvement of API availability whenever the user accesses a multi-cloud, as well as a complete elimination of outages thanks to a decoupling of the foundational architecture from the data center. Total failover is achieved within just five minutes, making it possible to seamlessly toggle between the cloud and on-premises on the fly, with no additional work required.  

The end result of all these efforts is notable in that remote users, regardless of device, are no longer penalized for using multi-cloud—all SSC functions now deliver a frictionless experience each and every time, with users never noticing a difference in performance whether they are in an office or off site.  

The benefits also extend to IT personnel. Since the design deployments are the same between the two locations, there is no learning curve for team members—implementing the multi-cloud is a transparent endeavor. Once deployed, teams no longer must devote extensive resources to multi-cloud support issues, enabling them to focus on more mission-critical tasks.
