Everything, Everywhere. How VMware Aria Automation for Secure Clouds Reimagines Security

by: VMware Staff Security Architect, Pankaj Sharma

How safe is safe? That’s the question on the minds of every enterprise security team. After all, the corporate ecosystem is more vulnerable than ever thanks to multi-cloud platforms, remote workers, and numerous other factors. The truth is legacy security solutions were never designed to protect the enterprise on the various (and ever-changing) fronts the cloud offers, especially when many require extensive human interaction and monitoring. And even with the most fully staffed support team, it’s still impossible to keep track of every cloud interaction.

Securing the clouds

Rising to this challenge, VMware IT employed VMware Aria Automation for Secure Clouds (formerly CloudHealth Secure State), a powerful solution that delivers an interconnected cloud security model (ICSM) that constantly examines all relationships between various cloud components. Featuring more than 300 rules right out of the box, the software’s core purpose is to seek out anomalies, vulnerabilities, threats, unauthorized/unusual changes, and similar issues before they can do any damage to the enterprise ecosystem. Plus, it ensures total compliance on every level, in every country in which VMware operates.

The software also removes a tremendous burden from our support teams. There is no longer the need to manually go through each potential scenario, parse together relationships, or to undertake other labor-intensive tasks. This frees up cloud security teams to focus on more mission-critical issues, and also ensures the enterprise is safer regardless of the threat at hand.

Today, VMware Aria Automation for Secure Clouds oversees nearly 15,000 AWS accounts, 3,000 Azure subscriptions, and 8,000 Google Cloud Platform projects at VMware—roughly 25,000 total clouds analyzed and monitored every second of the day.

Does it work? Since implementation, our teams have seen an 80 percent drop in critical issues as well as an 80 percent increase in compliance levels. Remarkable results given the tremendous scale at which VMware Aria Automation for Secure Cloud operates.
