VMware IT supports a highly distributed workforce, connecting more than 35,000 employees using a wide variety of devices. Unfortunately, the traditional comanagement overseeing tens of thousands of laptops and mobile devices created substantial challenges, including negative impacts on worker productivity. See Figure 1.
A more modern outlook
The solution came in the form of modernized workplace management, which enables our teams to build, run, connect and protect any app, on any cloud, on any device. It incorporates four key components—factory provisioning, Azure Active Directory cloud join, Windows Hello for Business, and VMware Workspace ONE® UEM management.
Every device is treated as if were a mobile one (the type most vulnerable to breaches), and there is an emphasis on micropersonas versus personas. Micropersonas take into account each user’s unique way of working rather than throwing individuals into one big group. For example, suppose Dietmar and Anyra both work in the office. Rather than treat them equally via an ‘office worker persona,’ micropersonas take into account the fact that Dietmar works offsite 70 percent of the time while Anyra prefers to work onsite full time.
As a result, both onboarding and ongoing laptop provisioning are streamlined, efficient, cost effective, and less labor intensive. Policy enforcement across departments is simplified, allowing new levels of choice, flexibility, and compliance. Centralized management and visibility are now possible thanks to VMware Workspace ONE® Intelligent Hub. Plus, IT can seamlessly integrate automation and security into a multi-cloud workplace management deployment, including all ecosystem endpoints.
Specific implementations are as follows:
New employee onboarding—Workspace ONE UEM offers a true zero-touch remote onboarding process for new employees via five simple steps. On Day One, their first official day, they can log in via any device, from anywhere, without having to remember any passwords. They can then choose the applications required to perform their official duties.
Windows 10 device provisioning—The VMware zero-touch, drop-shipping approach to Windows 10 devices has proven extremely successful. Delivery is faster than traditional methods, and users are productive from Day One thanks to self-service imaging. For IT, the zero-touch approach frees up resources, enables faster user support, removes the need to maintain an image, and eliminates the need for a pre-login VPN.
macOS management—Similar to Windows 10 provisioning, MacOS laptops are shipped directly to users via a zero-touch process. Step-by-step instructions guide users through the keyboard layout as well as setting up a PIN to access Workspace ONE, email and activate backup systems.
