How did you get into IT in the first place?

It’s all I ever wanted to do.  I started my own company in college installing and configuring 16-bit Novell NICs for classmates.  I’ve worked in the custom PC, legal, telecommunications, medical and service provider industries since!

How did you get into working with VMware and becoming a 2011 vExpert?

I began working with VMware technologies in 2007 when the service provider that I worked for started the process of standing up a public cloud offering.  Between being an early multi-tenant adopter and an early participant in the VMware Service Provider Program, I’ve been very involved with the SP business focus that VMware has developed.  I started blogging in early 2010 as we began evaluating converged infrastructure options and quickly moved into writing for an SP-specific audience.  Between the blog and Twitter I’ve been very grateful for the number of peers and colleagues that I’ve been able to find and interact with.

What would you tell someone who wanted to get a job like yours to do?

Don’t be afraid to reach further than you think you are capable of, as long as you are willing to put in the work needed to be successful.  Some of the best professional experiences I’ve had have involved challenges that scared me a little when I first considered them.  Be on time, be excited about your job every day and find someone that you can learn from to help you along the way.
