Ryan Coates details his journey to install ESX Server on white box commodity hardware. This is not rocket science (and it’s certainly not supported!), but is great for home labs and test labs for those who know what they’re doing. You can’t slap any old motherboard, nic, and disk drive together and expect it to work, but if you want to try it, there is also a lot of expertise on the VMTN Forums.

As many of you know, I have been doing a fair bit of research and proof of concept work into getting ESX onto a generic whitebox platform (unsupported of course).
This is basically so I can study and test configurations and such without having the noise of an aircraft carrier blowing through my living room, and being able to keep those timely mortgage payments going out!Today I finally succeeded in my endeavour after a fair bit of a journey, and I’m going to share a little with you.
