Site Recovery Manager Technology Partners Virtual Volumes (vVols)

Hitachi Data Systems Extends vSphere Virtual Volumes and VMware Data Protection Offerings

In this guest post Dinesh Singh, Solutions Marketing Manager at Hitachi Data Systems, shares an update on further integration with VMware products and support for our Software-Defined Storage strategy.

HDS recently announced new Software-defined storage solutions to help customers run agile and available IT operations.

HDS announced support for vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols) on the Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) G1000 on Aug 18. This support extends the HDS solutions enabled with vVols, which also includes the NFS storage Hitachi NAS Platform. In the limited span since general availability, we have received encouraging response from customers, who want to test and migrate to the efficient operational model enabled by vVols. You can read some of the most frequently asked questions on HDS and vVols here.

HDS teamed up with VMware as a strategic partner to provide customers with the benefits of application-based automation and granular virtual machine (VM) lifecycle management for block storage systems, i.e. VSP G1000, G600, G400, G200 and HNAS platform. Legacy Existing Hitachi storage systems can surface capabilities by virtualizing behind either HNAS or VSP G1000 systems.

Hitachi data protection and data management solution Virtual Infrastructure Integrator 3.0 (aka V2I) has received some significant upgrades in order to provide better backup and recovery capabilities for VMs deployed on HDS block and file storage. Application-consistent VM backup/restore can be managed from your very familiar vCenter console. With the latest release, V2I adds support for the complete Hitachi storage family (Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) G1000, G200, G400, G600, HUS VM and HNAS), including converged solutions like Unified Compute Platform (UCP) family. VMs on VMFS and NFS datastores can be protected efficiently.

The key benefits for virtual server admins using V2I are:

  • Scheduled and instantaneous VM backup and restore services using integrated storage snapshot services (HTI and File Clone) for Block and File VMware deployments
  • The ability to meet backup and recovery SLAs at VM-level granularity (more RPO’s, better RTO) while reducing storage backup capacity consumption
  • VM and Application consistent backup and VM and user empowered file level recovery with integrated VMware UI experience
  • Additional VM storage infrastructure services to ensure optimized best practice environment

HDS is also working closely with VMware on expanding the capabilities of VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM). In order to deliver on our commitment to our customers, we partnered with VMware to provide orchestrated recovery capabilities to stretched cluster deployments of VSP G1000s using SRM. Active-active cluster configurations of our storage systems with SRM provides high availability with read-write from both sites along with ability to automate recovery from disasters. SRM orchestration provides enhanced automation in restoring infrastructure in the event of disaster.

To help deliver enhanced value to customers, we provide deep integration with VMware cloud management and operational management solutions. We will demonstrate our range of plug-ins and adapters for VMware solutions, such as vRealize Operations Manager, vRealize Log InSight Manager and vRealize Orchestrator, at the upcoming VMworld. Come visit us at booth #905 from August 30th through September 3rd in San Francisco. 30-Sep 03 for exciting storage and converged solutions
