Products Site Recovery Manager VMware Cloud on AWS vSphere Storage

What’s New with VMware Site Recovery

With the latest release of VMware Site Recovery, we are excited to deliver massive improvements that enable you to protect your most critical applications with minimal data loss and at scale. This update for VMware Site Recovery brings with it a 1-minute RPO, the ability to scale up to 4,000 VMs, auto-scaling and load balancing, expanded regional availability, additional REST APIs, and additional support for VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts.

As a refresher, VMware Site Recovery service expands and simplifies traditional disaster recovery operations by delivering on-demand site protection across a common, vSphere-based operating environment from on-premises to the cloud. The service protects workloads between on-premises data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS, as well as between different instances of VMware Cloud on AWS. Based on industry leading, enterprise-grade recovery plan automation (VMware Site Recovery Manager) and native hypervisor-based replication capabilities (VMware vSphere Replication) trusted by thousands of customers, the service provides an end-to-end disaster recovery solution that reduces the requirements for a secondary DR site, accelerates time-to-protection, and simplifies DR operations.

Release highlights

1 Minute RPO: With a change in replication architecture, VMware Site Recovery now supports RPOs (Recovery Point Objectives) as low as 1 minute, down from 5 mins. Having a 1 minute RPO is important for business critical applications, which demand higher RPOs. In addition, this update will support flexible RPO policies from 1 min to 24 hours depending upon workloads so that customers can align RPOs based on criticality of the data.

This flexibility is important because it provides greater resilience against disaster recovery scenarios and affords customers the ability to balance between disaster recovery readiness and cost of ownership when preparing and recovering from disasters.

Scale to 4,000 protected VMs: Previously, with VMware Site Recovery, customers were able to protect environments with up to 3000 VMs per SDDC. With this enhancement, customers will be able to protect larger environments by replicating up to 4000 VMs in single protected SDDC thus helping customers reduce the complexity and costs of their DR environment in the cloud.

Auto-scaling and Load Balancing: VMware Site Recovery now supports automated load balancing that automatically distributes replicated VMs across target site hosts. Additionally, VMware Site Recovery now automatically scales out recovery site resources as required to support the required replication capacity.

With this enhancement, VMware Site Recovery will support automated load balancing that will distribute the replicas across resources for optimal performance. Also, VMware Site Recovery will support automated scale-out that will leverage provisioned resources and ESXi hosts and automatically add them up to additional replication capacity. These enhancements will help customers maintain the high levels of performance and meet DR RPO objectives.

Expanding regional availability: VMware Site Recovery now supports the AWS Middle East (Bahrain) region. VMware Site Recovery is now available in 23 Global AWS Regions

Additional REST APIs for VMware Site Recovery: Customers will be able to use public RESTFUL APIs to monitor DR operations, set up protection and recover workloads using VMware Site Recovery. With a comprehensive set of APIs, customers will be able to build end to end automation to configure and manage DR at scale.

Support for VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts: VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts is the VMware and AWS jointly engineered on-premises as-a-service solution that integrates VMware’s enterprise-class Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) software for compute (vSphere), storage (vSAN), and networking (NSX) along with vCenter Management. As a fully managed service, VMware Cloud on AWS Outposts relieves IT teams from the burden of managing infrastructure and empowers them to focus on business innovation by bringing the cloud operating model on-premises.
