#StorageMinute – Data Migration Pre-Check in vSAN 6.7 U3

Welcome to the #StorageMinute series, where we deliver key topics via bite-size content. In this edition, we look at a new feature enhancement to vSAN Maintenance Mode workflow called Data Migration Pre-Check.

This feature performs a cluster-wide impact assessment of a host entering maintenance mode. This assessment dramatically helps an administrator make informed decisions while planning maintenance activities.

With vSAN, each host in the cluster contributes to the capacity and thereby has data stored in the local physical drives. While moving a host to maintenance mode, you must decide if data needs to be migrated or retained. Also, if data needs to move, you have to ascertain the type and amount of data that needs to move.

The Data Migration Pre-Check feature helps ascertain for each migration type:

  1. If the host can be moved to maintenance mode
  2. The amount of data to be moved
  3. The state of the cluster after moving the host to maintenance mode

It also provides a detailed assessment in the context of Object Compliance and accessibility, Cluster Capacity, and Predicted Object Health. This helps the administrator to clearly understand the impact at a granular level as well as the cluster level impact.
