Welcome back to another edition of “Feature in Five,” our byte-sized videos of industry-leading VMware product solutions, all in—that’s right—five short minutes or less! Last time, we video-profiled Site Recovery Manager DRaaS Planned Migration; in this feature, we turn our attention to vSAN Integrated vSphere Update Manager (VUM).
vSAN Integrated vSphere Update Manager
To start, VMware vSphere Update Manager (VUM) is an automation software for patch management. vSphere Administrators may know that with VUM, they can download a baseline and conduct upgrades of their vSphere environment. Now, VUM is integrated with vSAN! This means that with vSAN Integrated VUM, not only can admins upgrade firmware, drivers, and vSAN clusters, but you can do it all in one place.
It all starts with a quick look at a user’s hosts and clusters. Admins can see what level of health their clusters and hosts are operating at in the current moment. If they are still operating in vSAN 6.5, vSAN Integrated VUM will have a baseline recommendation to upgrade to vSAN 6.7. A baseline is what vSphere and vSAN have deemed as a good driver, which have been tested, vetted and known to work well with vSAN. Now, before the upgrade, hosts will be technically non-compliant and will need to be remediated. Once remediation is complete, however, VUM will continue through all clusters, non-disruptively – a rollout upgrade.
In the past, these upgrades were something admins had to do in the past in different locations, consistently wondering if they had the right firmware, download or otherwise.
