In case you missed Dell Technology World the other week, it was clear that Dell EMC VxRail, the market-leading HCI appliance, and VMware vSAN, the market-leading HCI software, took center stage throughout the week. The 14,000 customers and industry people in attendance enjoyed a front row seat to the evolution from traditional storage to hyper-converged infrastructure.
HCI Virtual Reality Demo Reveals Real Hybrid Cloud
During his key note address, Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, showed a virtual reality demo of data moving from traditional storage to a Dell PowerEdge 14G-based VxRail server—powered by vSAN of course—and then, with a flip of the wrist, migrating VM’s from VxRail to the public cloud for a native hybrid cloud experience—all possible only with VMware today!
Jeff Clarke, Dell Vice Chairman of Products and Operations, noted during his Tuesday keynote that “we have no better example than what we mean by software-defined everything than your VxRail with a 14G (PowerEdge) running NVMe and our management stack running (VMware vSAN).” And Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, President and General Manager of Dell EMC server and infrastructure systems, noted that VxRail and VxRack SDDC are powering customers’ production workloads today.
HCI Innovation Continues with Product Announcements
Dell EMC announced at the show several enhancements for the vSAN powered VxRail appliance, including a NVMe cache drive option, Intel Xeon Scalable Processors supporting up to 1.5TB of RAM per CPU socket, and NVIDIA Tesla P40 GPU accelerators.
Other highlights included:
• Two Cube interviews focused on HCI, one with Chris Stanly of Celtic Manor Resorts, a VxRail customer, with Shannon Champion of Dell EMC, and another with VMware’s Lee Caswell discussing the state and future of HCI.
• The VxRail Escape Room, a VR assisted room designed for demonstrating VxRail’s architecture and capabilities. The escape room was visited by hundreds of customers during the show.
• The inauguration of the Destination Dell bus, an expandable RV designed to demonstrate a breadth of Dell EMC products, now including vSAN ReadyNodes and in the near future VxRail. The Dell branded RV will make over hundred stops in the US in the coming months and will be visited by thousands of customers.
• And to top this, the VxRail and vSAN hands-on lab was two of the most popular HOL’s at the show.
