Performance testing (benchmarking) has been a fairly standard practice for years when evaluating external storage, but HCI presents new testing challenges. In a hyper-converged architecture, each server is intended to support many application VMs, as well as contribute to the pool of storage available to applications. Unfortunately, traditional tools for testing storage don’t consider all the testing scenarios to validate an HCI solution. To address this situation, VMware released a storage performance testing automation tool— HCIBench—that automates the use of the popular Vdbench testing tool in larger clusters. This week on the Virtually Speaking Podcast we welcome VMware’s Dave Morera to walk us through the details of HCIBench 2.0 and share some guidance on HCI performance testing.
