We are very pleased to see FoundationDB released as open source. Wavefront by VMware was one of the early users of FoundationDB, and is today one of the largest production users of this technology.
FoundationDB is a high-performance, NoSQL database that makes it possible to store more data faster and cheaper than ever before, and in a way that overcomes key drawbacks in similar database technologies. Wavefront has been using FoundationDB extensively with over 50 clusters spanning petabytes of data in production. Wavefront has been independently working with the codebase since Apple’s acquisition of FoundationDB in 2015, and it’s great to see Apple releasing the source code to the community.
We’ve already made several contributions to the code base and we intend to remain active contributors. The Wavefront team has already submitted two bug fixes and improvements to the project’s memory storage engine (for recovery and space efficiency). Furthermore, we are happy to share more details on how we use FoundationDB to run at massive scale, reliably, on AWS. Just contact us or start a 30-Day free trial.
The FoundationDB source code is released under the Apache v2 license. You can find information at foundationdb.org including the blog post announcement and launched community forums at forums.foundationdb.org.
A quick backgrounder about Wavefront. Founded in 2013, we are a cloud-native metrics monitoring and analytics platform (running on AWS) inspired by experiences at Twitter, Google and Facebook. It’s designed for teams managing at-scale revenue generating cloud applications running on a modern infrastructure and software stack. Wavefront is observability as-a-service that enables engineering teams at many of the leading SaaS companies to ship new features faster, by finding issues before they become critical and fixing them before customers are impacted. We were acquired by VMware in 2017, and our SaaS offering is now branded as Wavefront by VMware.
