VMware Tanzu Application Service is a mission-critical platform that enables enterprises to deliver their applications faster with a more secure path to production. Additionally, the platform can allow for improved engineering efficiency by offering a highly automated, intrinsically secure, and resilient application runtime.
We’re excited to pre-announce the release of Tanzu Application Service 5.0! Tanzu Application Service 5.0 will be focused on features that enhance the developer experience and can improve platform engineering. Let’s take a sneak peek into the great features coming to Tanzu Application Service 5.0 in October 2023!
Further improvements to developer experience
Building on the 4.0 release of the new developer portal, we’re excited to share improved beta functionality in the VMware Tanzu Application Service Portal in this upcoming release.
-
Tanzu Application Service Developer Portal supports data persistence (beta) – Developers and platform engineers alike can benefit from MySQL database integration for persisting data in the software catalog and other plugins used in the Tanzu Application Service Developer Portal. Our engineering team has made great strides in contributing MySQL support to the Backstage community.
In order to help developers and engineers debug and troubleshoot issues, the following feature has been added to Tanzu Application Service 5.0:
- Distributed tracing for platform components enables faster debugging – By adding tracing to all Tanzu Application Service components, this enables faster debugging and troubleshooting. Customers are enabled to trace errors and pinpoint the network issues using Splunk and other log aggregation tools. This means that customers can also have a quicker way to tie information together from multiple Tanzu Application Service components. Support engineers can also be able to identify the root cause of issues and debug them more quickly.
Cost efficiencies for platform engineering
Stemming from Tanzu Application Service’s excellence in operations and engineering, it is our goal to make platform engineering teams operate more efficiently on the platform. These additional features are keys to driving down costs for platforming engineering teams:
- Improved platform tooling for disaster recovery workflows – For the platform tooling feature, additional BOSH commands were added to assist in the case of a platform outage. The two commands that assist in this process are the “bosh create-recovery-plan” and “bosh recover” commands. These new BOSH workflows can help platform engineers bring the platform back online faster.
- New architecture for application metrics reduces platform footprint and lowers infrastructure costs – This beta feature in Tanzu Application Service adds OpenTelemetry support, allowing platform engineers to egress metrics directly via the OpenTelemetry Collector as an alternative to using the firehose and/or nozzles. In combination with aggregate syslog drains, Tanzu Application Service customers can potentially reduce the number of Doppler and Traffic Controller virtual machines to save on resources and costs on both public and private clouds.
Eliminate toil and expand access
Tanzu Application Service continues to enable customers to save time with maintenance and can provide additional access to services through partnerships in 5.0.
- Reduce maintenance toil for further automation of the certificate rotation process – In the 5.0 release, BOSH DNS certificates will automatically rotate on stemcell upgrades through an opt-in feature. Operations managers can track the rotation process and keep a pulse on each phase of the rotation. This enables an “always be rotating” model that could help eliminate the need to allocate time and apply changes multiple times specifically for rotating certificates.
- Expanded cloud provider support with Oracle Cloud VMware Solution – Tanzu Application Service customers can expand their cloud provider support with the addition of Oracle Cloud VMware Solution in 5.0. Customers can take advantage of VMware Tanzu products while also having the support of Oracle’s Cloud offerings.
