As a Pivot, it is not uncommon to see groups of people on office tours learning about how we work at Pivotal, but the group on tour on the morning of April 27, 2017, was a little different: they were much younger than our typical clients or potential clients. The San Francisco office hosted their first ever Take Your Child To Work Day. The learned about the importance of a good breakfast every day, pairing, and ping pong.
The older kids met with a person in facilities, the “client,” who outlined a real-life problem in our office: sometimes the compost, recycling, and trash aren’t put into the appropriate bins in the kitchen.
The kids were led through a quick Discovery and Framing (D&F) where they did user testing to see how Pivots sort their waste and then helped create a quiz app for teaching Pivots what constitutes as “compost,” “recycling,” and “trash.”
By the end of the morning, they had a working (albeit buggy) MVP. They presented it to the “client” and showed Pivots how to use it.
While the older kids were getting a hands-on feel for how we work, the younger kids got to color, play with sticky notes, go on a scavenger hunt (a big hit!), and take a trip to the carousel at Yerba Buena Gardens.
Even these younger kids got a good grasp on how we work: one went up to a data scientist working solo and asked, “Where’s your pair?”
