Enterprise PKS hits 1.6 GA; your on-ramp to the VMware Tanzu portfolio plus Kubernetes 1.15, and a new management console

It’s not enough to just build out a few Kubernetes clusters – you need to get them running in production to deliver business value. That’s why each release of Enterprise PKS churns out more and more features to help you run Kubernetes at scale. That description fits Enterprise PKS 1.6, now GA. Download the bits and read the docs!

So what’s new in this release? Here are the highlights.

  • The GA of a new UI-driven management console for Day 1 configuration, deployment and Day 2 monitoring of PKS installations.
  • Kubernetes 1.15, with performance enhancements, a gradual increase in the stability of management and bootstrap components, and heightened use of custom resources.
  • Simple, automated attach of PKS clusters to Tanzu Mission Control for unified administration of all Kubernetes clusters in your organization.
  • Enhanced Network monitoring for system components and network traffic using Kubernetes custom resource definitions (CRDs) and detection of dropped or rejected network packets.
  • Additional user quotas to prevent over-provisioning of clusters and control infrastructure costs.
  • A new “audit” user role with read-only permissions.
  • Support for Splunk and ElasticSearch (in addition to existing Telegraf support).

Over 250 companies are running Enterprise PKS; many are in production. Why is the product so popular?

Pivotal VP of Technology Cornelia Davis explained how Enterprise PKS’ unique approach and technology for running Kubernetes in production, in her breakout session at the recent SpringOnePlatform conference:

PKS sets the stage, Tanzu takes the spotlight

PKS is a key piece of the VMware Tanzu portfolio. In fact, it’s the best place to get started today in order to position your business for the benefits of the full VMware Tanzu portfolio over the coming months. Enterprise PKS is your “on-ramp” to Tanzu! Use Enterprise PKS to run Kubernetes consistently across environments and manage it all from a single point of control.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger and Kubernetes founder Joe Beda lay out the Tanzu vision at the recent VMworld Europe conference keynote presentation:

An Intuitive Management Console for Kubernetes: Designed for Day 1 and Day 2

The Enterprise PKS Management Console will be available to all customers shortly after the PKS 1.6 GA. Operators will immediately notice the difference with a comprehensive, menu-driven, Day 1 experience to configure and install Enterprise PKS.

Gain better visibility of your Enterprise PKS components, Kubernetes clusters and infrastructure with the new Management Console

Of course, you’re going to spend the majority of your time Day 2 and beyond running and operating Kubernetes clusters. That’s why the Management Console streamlines these activities, providing visibility into the configuration and status of running Enterprise PKS instances, Kubernetes clusters, and nodes within clusters. You can also access copy & paste kubectl commands to access Kubernetes resources from the command line. This video shows the enhanced management experience.

There’s even more to like here:

  • Upgrade and Patch Enterprise PKS. Apply patches and upgrades to your Enterprise PKS installation.

  • User management. Administrators can use the Management Console to ensure employees have the right level of access based on their role (RBAC).

  • Integration with other VMware management tools. Enterprise PKS is at its best when it’s tied in with other tools like Wavefront and the vRealize family products. Use the console to manage those integration points.

Enterprise PKS plugs into Tanzu Mission Control

VMware Tanzu Mission Control provides a unified management experience across your entire Kubernetes estate. It allows operators to provision or attach Kubernetes clusters to a single control point, and then apply policy (access, security, back-up, etc.) to individual clusters or groups of clusters. And developers can access Kubernetes namespaces with APIs for self-service access to resources. Tanzu Mission Control can bring together these two groups to drive resource efficiencies and developer productivity. Tanzu Mission Control is now in beta and will work out of the box with Enterprise PKS to simplify and automate Kubernetes management.

Enterprise PKS is also honored to again receive the CRN “Tech Innovator of the year” award for Container Technology, an unbroken run since its first release in 2018.
