As we start an exciting new chapter as part of Broadcom, the team behind Tanzu Application Service wanted to take a moment to reflect on all the great work our engineering teams have accomplished this year in an effort to bring more value to our customers. Our teams continued to make improvements in the developer and platform engineering experiences with further enhancements to Tanzu Application Service. We successfully delivered two major product releases, continued our commitment to the Cloud Foundry community, and announced product innovations at Explore in Las Vegas and Barcelona. Let’s take a look back at all the announcements around Tanzu Application Service in 2023!
Tanzu Application Service 4.0
In April, we released the next installment of the long-term support track, Tanzu Application Service 4.0.
Here are a few highlights of the release:

Backstage landed in Tanzu Application Service with the introduction of the Tanzu Application Service Developer Portal, which focuses on improving developer productivity by including everything you need at your fingertips with a built-in software catalog, resource visualizer, and application accelerators.

Our engineering teams added features to the platform supporting the developer experience, such as IWA support for .Net Framework applications, cloud native buildpack support, and large application upload support, bringing greater capabilities to our customers.

Platform engineers can save time with these features: long-term support of Tanzu Operations Manager, support for vSphere 8, enhancements to log bundle collection, and automatic rotation of nonconfigurable leaf certificates on the platform.

Across the ecosystem, engineering teams released new functionality, such as MySQL 8.0 support for the MySQL tile and additional functionality for both the cloud service brokers for Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services, which broadens the reach of Tanzu Application Service and easily integrates with these industry offerings.

Cloud Foundry Day 2023
We were honored to attend the sold-out Cloud Foundry Day 2023 in Heidelberg, Germany, and meet Tanzu Application Service customers and members of the Cloud Foundry community from across the globe. The conference was a success as the community shared updates on various projects, congratulated new members of technical committees, and welcomed new members to the governing board and overall community.

Tanzu Application Service 5.0
In October, we announced the release of Tanzu Application Service 5.0, which brought even more enhancements to the developer and platform engineering experiences.
The major additions to Tanzu Application Service 5.0 included:

Improved application operations for developers, including application readiness healthchecks, distributed tracing, and OpenTelemetry metric exporter support. This makes it easier for customers to check the status of their applications and simplify a resolution for any issues that arise.

Continued investment in expanding the Developer Portal to include more useful capabilities that provide a seamless experience for developers.

More features added to Tanzu Operations Manager, including automatic rotation of BOSH DNS certificates, disaster recovery workflows, database pruning, and human-readable VM names for vSphere to make managing Tanzu Application Service easier and more efficient.

Expansions within the Tanzu Application Service ecosystem, including Tanzu Cloud Service Broker for AWS MySQL support now GA, support for Oracle Cloud VMware Solution, and the addition of VMware Postgres, which expands Tanzu Application Service integrations with these industry offerings to make the platform even more useful.

Product innovations announced at Explore
2023 was a busy year for the Tanzu Application Service teams at VMware Explore in Las Vegas and Barcelona! We hosted more than 18 sessions in Las Vegas and 10 in Barcelona, and our team loved meeting face to face with customers to share all the latest and greatest updates happening in Tanzu Application Service.

Tanzu AI for Tanzu Application Service coming soon
At Explore in Barcelona, we were excited to announce a beta program to bring AI functionality to Tanzu Application Service, which is planned to launch later this fiscal quarter. Customers interested in running private AI services within their Tanzu Application Service environment can sign up for this beta program to get early access to what we are building within the ecosystem utilizing private AI technologies.

The milestones we accomplished in 2023 speak to our commitment to the product and the overall Cloud Foundry community. Furthermore, we are very excited about all of the new features planned in the roadmap and will be excited to share those features as they become available under our normal release cadence.
