VMware Receives Excellent Scores in 4 Use Cases in the 2020 Gartner Critical Capabilities for WAN Edge Infrastructure

Two weeks after being named a Leader in the 2020 Gartner Magic Quadrant for WAN Edge Infrastructure for the third year in a row, VMware is ecstatic to announce that it has received an excellent rating (within the 4.0 range) in four of five use cases in the 2020 Gartner Critical Capabilities for WAN Edge Infrastructure report.

First I’ll tell you what those use cases are and then I’ll tell you why you should give us a call to talk about how our services can make a difference in your business.

The use cases:

  • Cloud-First WAN
  • Large Global WAN
  • Small Footprint Retail WAN
  • Small/Midsize Enterprise/Regional WAN

VMware SD-WAN™ was developed to be cloud-first and our tagline for the last six years has been “The Cloud is the Network.” We live and breathe it in our development and it shows in the solution that thousands of customers enjoy today. Speaking of customers, did you know that we have proudly deployed SD-WAN across many organizations that have 10,000+ sites? Not only is our solution visionary, but it is also robust and scalable. If you’re planning to grow your network or not, VMware will be right there with you, every step of the way.

And the last two use cases? Retail has always been a great vertical for SD-WAN given its need to connect many branches, headquarters, cloud ERP systems, always-on transaction availability, and more. In addition, our solution offers PCI DSS compliance, so small or large retail organizations are set from the onset.

VMware SD-WAN does not discriminate between small and large WAN. Our solution is designed to accommodate any number of sites and deployments, from companies with five sites or 20,000 and beyond.

Now why should you consider VMware for your SD-WAN and SASE network strategy? Let’s get Gartner’s input.

Gartner describes VMware’s performance as “VMware’s rankings are driven by its excellent scores in scalability, cloud features, SD-WAN features, operational features, small platform flexibility and deployment flexibility capabilities.”

Supporting VMware’s performance in the report is its continued commitment to investing in and delivering solutions that align with customer needs. This is reflected in VMware offering of SASE (secure access service edge) which converges cloud networking and cloud security to deliver flexibility, agility, security, and scale for enterprise of all sizes.

VMware’s unique approach to SD-WAN includes over 100 points of presence (PoPs) around the world that serve as an onramp to SaaS and other cloud services. This global footprint gives VMware a presence to launch new networking and security services, as well as integrations with best of breed security partners. At its flagship event on September 29, VMworld 2020, VMware announced its cloud-delivered VMware SASE Platform™ architecture combines the VMware SD-WAN™ Gateways, VMware Secure Access™, secure web gateway (SWG) and cloud security access broker (CASB) services, along with next-gen firewall functions. VMware has partnered with both Menlo Security and Zscaler to deliver SWG and CASB services as part of the platform. These networking and security services can be delivered in an intrinsic or sequenced manner to branch edges, mobile and work-from-home users, campuses, and IoT devices.

The Gartner Critical Capabilities report is essential reading and an important companion report to the Gartner Magic Quadrant. It states, “The WAN edge market has been evolving with the primary goal to address the shift from traditional hub-and-spoke WAN architectures to connect with more distributed cloud workloads and internet-based resources as well as other corporate locations. Increasingly, infrastructure is anywhere, so networking needs to be everywhere. Infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders responsible for networking can use the critical capabilities assessed in this report to inform their search for appropriate solutions that more closely meet their specific requirements.”

We’re very proud to receive this validation three years in a row and extremely excited for what the future brings!
