AI and the promise of the software-defined edge have captured the imagination of our enterprise customers—and here at Broadcom, we remain committed to helping our customers unlock their full potential. With more than 50% of data expected to be produced outside of data centers by 2027[1], our team is focused on enabling the efficient and effective use of data at the edge by providing intelligent infrastructure and networks to run your workloads.
The use cases in play at the edge are vast, but one thing they all have in common is the need for resilient and secure connectivity. The network infrastructure needs to be able to understand the application and adjust the network dynamically to offer customers the best possible quality experience. For this reason, our VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN solutions play a fundamental role in enabling our customers at the software-defined edge.
Given that important role in our customers’ deployments, here are some examples of the ways we’re advancing VMware VeloCloud’s SD-WAN solution today.
Building on a tradition of innovation
Broadcom has steadily built up a track record of proven acquisition success, consistently investing in acquired companies, such as Symantec and CA Technologies. VMware, along with the VeloCloud portfolio, is no different. The company continues to identify significant market opportunities and invests in the best solutions to fulfill those market requirements.
The SD-WAN market is a fantastic example of this. It continues to grow fast, expected to expand at a CAGR of 22.41% and reach $15.4 billion by 2030.[2] To meet market needs, VeloCloud continues to release innovation. Recently, Sanjay Uppal, VP and GM of Broadcom’s Software-Defined Edge division, presented his vision for the future of VeloCloud where he announced several new enterprise appliances, including the VMware SD-WAN Edge 710 for branch networking, AIOps, and security.
Our product innovation aligns with many of our partners’ strategic initiatives and industry trends. We continue to support our service provider partners as they unlock innovation in access networks. The new 5G Edge, VMware VeloCloud Edge 710-5G, adds 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), integrated wireless LAN, and support for LEO satellite connectivity to support new use cases, including mobile edge locations in public safety like police cars and ambulances.
Continued advancement of technical capabilities
VeloCloud has been leading the way for years because it is purpose-built for SD-WAN. In fact, that’s the reason we recently returned to the name “VeloCloud” — because it’s synonymous with “SD-WAN,” and for good reason. Our cloud-native approach aligns with our customers’ operational objectives, bringing the agility and flexibility needed at the edge.
- Cloud-native: VeloCloud’s cloud-native design ensures seamless integration with leading cloud platforms, offering superior performance for cloud-based applications.
- Dynamic control: VeloCloud’s patented Dynamic Multipath Optimization ™ (DMPO) technology constantly monitors path quality and automatically enhances application performance at a per-packet level, ensuring low latency and high end-user experience for business-critical applications.
- Global PoPs: VeloCloud offers a global network of cloud gateways for secure, optimized connections to SaaS applications and cloud services. In fact, Broadcom has extended its partnership with Google Cloud to deploy VeloCloud SD-WAN Gateways at Google PoPs, further improving latency and performance for our customer deployments.
- Performance monitoring: Real-time monitoring and visibility into network health enable proactive troubleshooting and optimized application delivery.
- Security: VeloCloud’s Enhanced Firewall Service (EFS) provides native, built-in branch security capabilities such as firewall, IPS, URL filtering, and malicious IP filtering, together with best-of-breed cloud security capabilities from third-party SSE providers. This allows our customers to use their preferred security solutions to secure edge locations and safeguard data from threats across the network with comprehensive multi-layered security defenses.
These are just a few reasons VeloCloud can provide robust network performance, reliability, superior user experience, and unmatched protection.
These VeloCloud capabilities come with extremely simplified operations. VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator (VECO) enables zero-touch provisioning and centralized management of VeloCloud Edge appliances to reduce operational complexity and streamline administration and deployment from a single pane of glass. The solution is scalable, accommodating businesses of all sizes without hardware constraints, and supports both on-premises and cloud deployments. This simplicity and flexibility means VeloCloud customers report faster deployment times (pictured in the figure above), lower operational costs, and superior long-term ROI.
Nurturing world-class partnerships
Our VeloCloud partners play a key role in delivering high-quality, reliable SD-WAN and SASE services and are critical to our strategy. For example, Fortune 100 company Fidelity Information Service (FIS) uses MetTel’s infrastructure, powered by Starlink and VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN, to deliver always-on, high-performance connectivity to businesses worldwide.
MetTel recently sat with John Pieratt, VP, Business Executive at Fidelity Information Service in a video to discuss how VMware VeloCloud played a role in helping them improve productivity and change the game for customer experiences. In the video, Lori Thomas, MetTel SVP of Strategy and Transformation explains, “The integration of VeloCloud, Starlink, and MetTel has revolutionized the connectivity landscape. The solution’s transport-independent architecture allows us to leverage multiple network connection access points — ensuring optimal performance and redundancy and also helping us prepare our customers for real-time applications like AI as they move to the edge.”
This solution is an example of how the VeloCloud team is working together with our partners to enable advanced use cases with satellite and mobile connectivity to help fix the problem of unreliable internet service for remote facilities.
Unlocking single-vendor synergies
Now that VMware is part of Broadcom, our customers can leverage Symantec SSE and VeloCloud SD-WAN technologies as part of a single-vendor SASE solution to access applications in a secure, reliable, and efficient way. This partnership allows us to devote our engineering resources towards investing in the best SD-WAN solution—while applying all the advantages and strengths of Symantec’s proven, mature SSE solution. In addition, VeloCloud remains committed to an open ecosystem, partnering with other leading SSE vendors, and offering choice and flexibility to our customers.
Earned trust by global enterprises
For the past 12 years, VMware and now Broadcom has provided optimized and secured connectivity infrastructure to over 21,000 customers and 650K sites. Together with our partners, we’ve achieved:
- #1 market share according to the Omdia SD-WAN Market Tracker
- 7 years in a row named a leader in the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for SD-WAN
