We are thrilled to announce a new minor release of VMware Edge Compute Stack (ECS), packed with powerful features designed to enhance your edge computing experience. Hot on the heels of the ECS 3.5 release of edge orchestration capabilities, this ECS 3.6 release focuses on making deployments ever simpler and more efficient, ensuring that your edge infrastructure is more accessible and easier to manage.
Key features in this release
Friendly host identifier
As we continue to make VMware Edge Compute Stack easier to use, we received valuable feedback that identifying the hosts at your edge locations was cumbersome when starting to scale to multiple sites and multiple hosts within these sites. As such, in this new release we have added a friendly host identifier which enables you to provide a name for your host when you register it. This will enable you to easily identify the host not only from the ECS SaaS service but also in your deployment (YAML) manifest as a nodeSelector.
Registration via activation code
Deploying edge hardware just got easier with our new registration process option. Previously, registering edge devices required a vendor, model and serial number. It would seem that hardware vendors are not always great at adding this information as unique entities in the BIOS, and therefore this was not always a unique way to identify the edge server being deployed. With our latest update, you can now choose to register devices using a unique activation code. This alternate registration method supports scenarios where obtaining the vendor, model and serial number is impractical, making these deployments faster and less complex.
Static IP addresses for all host components
From working with customers, we understand that edge locations may not always have a dedicated DHCP service available, and the infrastructure might have to be set up with dedicated IP addresses and route information to data center or cloud services. In this release, we introduce the ability to assign static IP addresses to all host components. This enhancement eliminates the need for customers to set up DHCP at each site, simplifying network configuration and ensuring consistent connectivity across your edge infrastructure.
These are just three of the many enhancements available in this release. See more in the release notes.
Enhancing your edge deployments
These new features are designed to address real-world challenges faced by our customers, providing more flexibility and control over edge deployments. By simplifying the registration process and network configuration, we aim to help you get your edge sites up and running quickly and efficiently.
We are committed to continuously improving VMware Edge Compute Stack to meet your evolving needs. Stay tuned for more updates and enhancements as we work to deliver the best edge computing solutions in the industry.
