VMware Edge Compute Stack

VMware Edge Compute Stack: New Editions and Features for Optimized Edge Solutions

VMware Edge Compute Stack (ECS) is at the forefront of delivering groundbreaking edge computing solutions to highly distributed locations where scaling is challenging and connectivity, space, and IT support can be very limited. Our latest update, slated for Q1 2024, brings significant enhancements in a more simplified new packaging, VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator (VECO), and integrations with VMware’s Edge VMs & K8s runtime with Edge Hyperconverged Infrastructure.

You can see VECO features in the technical preview now. If you have a feature request, fill out our online form.

VMware Edge Compute Stack technology updates

The core of this update lies in the underlying technology upgrade, which enhances key components including hypervisor, container, and HCI (Hyper-converged Infrastructure) packaging. This improvement is part of our commitment to providing the latest technologies from VMware in the software defined edge space.

Alongside these enhancements, we’re introducing innovative products developed by the Software Defined Edge Division (SDE), notably the VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator (VECO). VECO, with its revolutionary pull vs. push approach, is set to transform edge computing management, offering unmatched scalability and autonomy. This is especially vital in environments like manufacturing plants and retail stores, where business-critical technology exists in a highly distributed environment.

Two new ECS editions

Our tailored approach is evident in the introduction of two distinct editions: Edge Compute Stack Advanced and Edge Compute Stack Enterprise.

  • The Advanced edition is ideal for customers requiring robust edge computing capabilities, adaptable for single node deployments on various hardware, including industrial and ruggedized PCs. This edition benefits greatly from VECO’s efficient management capabilities. Telemetry is available now and orchestration is slated for Q2 this year.
  • The Enterprise edition is for customers with more complex needs, with 1 TiB per core of shared storage in multi-node cluster. Building upon the Advanced edition, it adds vSAN Enterprise for storage, delivered by VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and VECO, offering a comprehensive solution for intricate edge computing needs.
VMware Edge Compute Stack editions

VECO’s current telemetry capabilities are just the beginning, with plans to expand into orchestration and lifecycle management of distributed edges at scale. Our licensing and support structure is designed to be flexible and scalable, catering to diverse operational needs with subscriptions available in 1-, 3-, and 5-year terms, including Software-Defined Edge production support. For businesses requiring more than the standard 128 cores per cluster, we offer customized solutions to meet their specific demands.

Packaging details

Delving into the specifics, the Advanced edition includes a core of VECO and VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) per core, backed by Software-Defined Edge production support. ECS Enterprise steps further, offering a core of VECO and a core of VCF, accompanied by 1 TiB of vSAN Enterprise and comprehensive software defined edge production support only for use in edge deployments.

The distinction between the Advanced and Enterprise editions is particularly notable in their VMware vSAN Enterprise offerings. The ECS Advanced edition provides 100 GiB/core of vSAN, with capacity tied to each ECS core, no aggregation. The ECS Enterprise edition, however, allows for 1 TiB of raw capacity per ECS enterprise core, with the flexibility to aggregate capacity across the customer’s edge instance environment and the option to purchase additional capacity through the vSAN per TiB add-on.
