February 27, 2024: VMware, recently acquired by Broadcom, announced that we’re returning to the VeloCloud brand for our SD-WAN and SASE solutions. Learn more in our press release and blog, Back to the Future with VeloCloud, the Intelligent Overlay for the Software-Defined Edge.

At VMware Explore Las Vegas, our experts presented a technical session on VMware SD-Access™, a cutting-edge solution for secure, remote network access. VMware SD-Access is revolutionizing the way organizations handle remote network access, offering a secure, efficient, and user-friendly solution. Delivered by Sr. Consulting System Engineer Suhasini Raj and Technical Marketing Engineer Mike Pfeiffer, the session delved into solution details including connectivity components and how to establish tunnels, implement DNS, design networks, deploy connectors, and automate with the API. The session also included a VMware SD-Access demo.

Understanding VMware SD-Access

VMware SD-Access is designed to provide remote access to corporate applications and resources, ensuring security and efficiency. It addresses the limitations of traditional remote access VPNs, which often result in poor performance due to data being routed through a central data center. SD-Access eliminates this bottleneck, offering a more direct and efficient network path.

VMware SD-Access delivers a high-performance private network fabric between servers, clouds, and remote workers’ desktops or mobile devices without requiring hardware edges. It also brings IoT devices and OT systems into a single pane of glass, the VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator™, that can manage massive edge deployments.

Solution components

The key components of VMware SD-Access include:

  • SD-Access Client: A software agent installed on devices like laptops, IoT devices or smartphones, enabling them to connect to the network.
  • SD-Access Connectors: Act as a bridge between user devices and corporate resources, improving accessibility.
  • SD-Access Orchestrator: A cloud-based management portal where administrators set up and monitor the network.
  • SD-Access Relays: Optimization relays on the internet that support smooth connectivity across various network devices.

Advantages of VMware SD-Access

Distributed enterprises need an easy and secure remote access solution that boosts productivity by optimizing connections for speed and quality. The VMware Explore session outlined a few major benefits of VMware SD-Access.

  • Enhanced performance: By avoiding unnecessary routing of data through centralized data centers, SD-Access provides faster and more reliable access to applications.
  • Flexibility and scalability: The solution can be tailored to various organizational needs, adapting to different network topologies and user requirements.
  • Improved security: SD-Access is built on the principles of Zero Trust Network Access, ensuring that network connections are secure and authenticated.

Practical applications and user experience

During the session, the presenters demonstrated how users could easily connect to VMware SD-Access and access necessary resources securely and efficiently. The user interface is intuitive, allowing for straightforward monitoring and management of network connections.
