Introducing VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator

The day started with VMware Edge featured in the Explore general session. VMware President Sumit Dhawan called the software-defined edge an area that will drive “huge innovation.” VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator is all about delivering fully programmable, right-sized infrastructure in a GitOps model with zero-touch implementation for the service levels required at the edge, said Dhawan. He cited the example of Audi, quoted in today’s press release, which is using VMware Edge Compute Stack™ to drive innovation in Audi e-tron® cars.

Our blog post, Manage the Software-Defined Edge with VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator, built on the excitement of the announcement in the general session. In the post, by Abe Ankumah, VP and GM, VMware SASE and Saadat Malik, VP and GM, VMware Edge Computing, we describe how VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator will help customers plan, deploy, run, visualize, and manage edge environments in a friction-free way.

VMware Retail Edge Solution

VMware’s first vertical-specific offering for VMware Edge Compute Stack is VMware Retail Edge Solution. It brings the agility, ease of management, and better security of VMware Edge Compute Stack to retail store environments. Companies are struggling with edge sprawl as they run more apps, produce more data and need more infrastructure at the edge. For example, a typical self-checkout stand at a store can have up to 30 tenants: customer loyalty programs, loss prevention, inventory management, security, coupon processing, credit card processing, and many more. If just one of these systems fail, the entire stand can become unusable. VMware Edge solutions could manage all these elements through a single console, across hundreds or even thousands of stores. It enables retailers to run their business workloads across all of their retail stores simply, and a lot more cost effectively. VMware is pleased to announce that it is working with Betacom, Boingo Wireless, and Federated Wireless as the initial beta wireless service provider partners for this new offering. Read the press releases from Betacom and Federated Wireless to learn more.

VMware Edge is everything, everywhere, all at once

In his solution keynote address, Sanjay Uppal, VP and GM of the VMware Service Provider and Edge business, introduced VMware Edge Cloud Orchestrator by asking: what, and where, is your edge? The edge can be just about anywhere, from a connected hospital cart to a construction site to the city of Las Vegas itself! Watch the video that introduced the keynote:

In his talk, Uppal described the software-defined edge: a distributed digital infrastructure for running workloads across dispersed locations, placed close to endpoints producing or consuming data. We’re living in an era where businesses are harnessing the power of edge computing to sift through heaps of data right where it’s generated. It’s all about gaining insights on the fly, making smarter decisions, and swapping out rigid devices for flexible software to boost our agility.

VMware is leaning into AI, ML, and computer vision like never before, helping our customers use them for everything from predictive maintenance and quality inspections to AR/VR remote ops and ensuring worker safety. We’re not just adapting to the future, we’re actively shaping it with the software-defined edge. Learn more in today’s blog post and press release.
