The Top 5 Trends in Enterprise Networking and Why They Matter: A Gartner Trend Insight Report is now available on the VMware website. The report surveys the current networking landscape and identifies five trends that could help make your company’s enterprise network infrastructure and operations better including SASE, multi-cloud, 5G, NetDevOps, and network as-a-service (NaaS).

Separating the hype from the investment-worthy

Multi-cloud, edge, and digital transformation: Buzzwords, yes, but also real-world necessities as enterprises start or continue digital projects to help them compete and serve their customers effectively. Business efforts range from taking on digital transformation one small step at a time, to radically overhauling large global systems. No matter where companies are on this journey, they are most likely navigating an existing maze of disparate old systems and a potential maze of new systems.

This Gartner report offers insight to infrastructure and operations (I&O) leaders searching for guidance on five technologies they may find helpful. The report discusses about which clouds are best for their use cases, the best ways to support the distributed workforce and new app development at the edge, the differences among network security models, and how to choose and manage the right vendors.

Factors in choosing a SASE solution

In the report, Gartner calls SASE “a key enabler of modern digital business transformation, including work from anywhere, zero trust, and the adoption of edge computing and cloud-delivered applications.” SD-WAN is the connectivity technology that underpins SASE.

When choosing SD-WAN and SASE solutions, the report suggests that I&O leaders pay attention to the following points:

  • “SD-WAN is a foundational component of SASE,” but companies should be cautious of “immature” SASE packages.
  • “76% of organizations that use the public cloud are using multiple public clouds, “driving the need for “management consistency.” Gartner suggests choosing cloud-native solutions first and “simplifying hybrid cloud management.”

Reasons to select SASE

Multiple clouds, remote work, and the adoption of new edge applications are changing how enterprises choose and purchase networking and security solutions. Organizations need secure, reliable, and optimal delivery of applications, data, and services regardless of where the application lives—data center, cloud, edge, SaaS—and regardless of the user’s location (home, office, airport, etc.).

VMware SASE™ converges industry-leading cloud networking with cloud security through a cloud-native, edge services platform. It has distinct advantages to help enterprises transform their clouds, workforces, and applications, including:

  • More than 200 global PoPs, deployed by VMware and its broad partner ecosystem, put users within milliseconds of major cloud and SaaS providers
  • Unparalleled user experience stemming from VMware SD-WAN‘s unique Dynamic Multipath Optimization™ adapts to network and connectivity conditions in real time
  • An Integrated, vendor-agnostic AIOPs platform, VMware Edge Network Intelligence™ delivers a rich user experience and provides artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML)-enabled visibility from users to applications across wireless or wired LAN, WAN, and the cloud
  • For remote access, the VMware SD-WAN client follows zero-trust principles to extend the benefits of reliable, optimal and secure connectivity for the devices of remote users. Cloud-hosted VMware Secure Access™ integrates with VMware Workspace ONE for zero-trust capabilities with managed remote devices.
  • Smart business policy defaults for more than 3,500 applications are built into the platform for a solution that is finely configurable but works out-of-the-box for most customers
  • VMware Cloud Web Security™ is a cloud hosted service that protects users and infrastructure accessing SaaS and Internet applications from threats, offering visibility, control, and compliance.
  • All components of VMware SASE can be managed through a single interface, the VMware SASE Orchestrator.
