Since its founding, VMware SD-WAN™ by VeloCloud® has been the SD-WAN solution of choice for service providers. Enterprises used to set up their WANs using custom proprietary hardware devices with complex software locked into these products. It was a heavy network at the edges built with physical products connected with expensive, thin private links. Enter VeloCloud, now part of VMware. We turned this physical product based network into a virtual service based one. No more custom proprietary hardware, no more complex software. “The Cloud is the Network,” we called it, and who better to run a virtual service network than the service provider! Fast forward to today, a little over 5 years since launch, VeloCloud, now part of VMware has achieved an industry milestone of being selected by over 100 of the largest service providers from around the world. We describe our architecture as being hyperscale and covering the Client-Cloud-Container continuum.
VMware announced today that its SD-WAN solution has been chosen by thousands of customers comprising 150,000+ sites in over 130 countries around the world. VeloCloud, now part of VMware, built its SD-WAN architecture from the ground up to be compatible with the technical and business needs of service providers. By integrating SD-WAN into their product portfolios, service providers deliver improved application performance, rapid WAN deployment, and simplified network operations to the enterprise customer.
VMware SD-WAN has a unique architecture of multi-tenant cloud gateways architected for hyperscale using elastic cloud and virtualization technologies. VMware SD-WAN Gateways are located in low latency proximity to multiple IaaS and SaaS clouds, greatly simplifying the on-ramp to any cloud and the ability to scale horizontally across multiple clouds. Access to the private data center, IaaS and SaaS is automated and enabled by a single click. VMware and its telecom service provider partners operate a global network of several thousand gateways and over a hundred orchestrators, in more than one hundred points of presence (POPs) globally. VMware’s multi-tenant architecture also enables service providers to manage thousands of customers from a single pane of glass.
Ours is certainly the enduring WAN architecture for the future. As the point of computation gets distributed out to the Edge, for low latency or local IOT aggregation or disconnected operations reasons, the containers get distributed out of the data centers to the SD-WAN Gateways and SD-WAN Edges that house them. Use cases abound across Retail, Healthcare, and Manufacturing. The automation of this distributed network requires algorithms trained with rich data – today our system collects 10B+ rich flow records over hundreds of underlay networks from the top service providers worldwide.
VMware is also partnering in an industry-leading effort to bring the combined power of 5G and SD-WAN to businesses worldwide, giving companies of all sizes unprecedented control and scalability of their wide area networks (WANs). The VMware SD-WAN solution will act as an overlay in conjunction with 5G underlays to deliver cost-effective, high-performance, application-aware services at the network edge.
Join us and our 100+ service provider partners for this next step in the exciting journey of the Network Edge!
