Facing a ransomware attack isn’t an optimal way to discover security and visibility gaps. But that’s just what happened to a VMware customer in the manufacturing industry earlier this year. The ransomware attack on their data center, which had only basic virtualization installed, exposed vulnerabilities in security and operations resilience.
VMware Professional Services experts performed damage assessments and remediation activities and understood the importance of rebuilding the customer’s environment with long-term security and reliability at the forefront. After the immediate ransomware issues were mitigated, a Jumpstart Workshop helped assess the environment and develop actionable steps for advanced threat protection and other security tools to address their most pressing needs.
The Jumpstart Workshop helped to alleviate the immediate issues and provided expert guidance towards their desired future state, which was a more secure and efficient infrastructure for their private cloud. They learned how to maximize VMware Cloud Foundation® (VCF) capabilities, achieve greater security and operations efficiency, and follow a strategic set of activities towards continued future success.
Output from the workshop
Once the VMware Professional Services team understood the customer’s IT infrastructure, they collaborated with them over multiple sessions to identify opportunities for improvement and remedy security gaps. This Jumpstart Workshop resulted in:
- Documented insights from an assessment of their technology environment
- High-level reference architecture recommendations for VCF
- A strategic capability roadmap to help measure progress against goals
- A comprehensive list of recommended VCF training courses to ensure that the organization’s staff could fully leverage the new tools they were adopting
The combination of strategic planning, technical recommendations, and educational resources gave this organization an actionable path forward.
Value through the customer’s lens
Close collaboration between VMware Professional Services and the architecture and infrastructure customer teams allowed for several immediate efficiency wins by utilizing previously untapped VCF capabilities while also laying a foundation for long-term technology investment success.
