Benchmarks Performance Virtualization VMmark vSAN

New VMmark Results Featuring 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors and vSphere 8

We are pleased to announce that two new VMmark results from Hewlett Packard Enterprise have been published today featuring 4th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors (codenamed Sapphire Rapids) and VMware vSphere 8.  The results can be seen in context on the VMmark results page, but here is a summary:

Server Vendor and Model Processor Model Total Hosts Total Sockets Total Cores VMmark 3.1.1 Score
HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11 Intel Xeon Platinum 8480+ 4 8 448 40.83 @ 42 Tiles
HPE ProLiant DL320 Gen11 Intel Xeon Gold 6454S 4 4 128 12.63 @ 12 Tiles

So how much better do these processors perform?  The chart below shows the VMmark performance of two 4-node HPE ProLiant DL380 vSAN clusters:

vSphere 7.0 with 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors vs. vSphere 8.0 with 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors

Key highlights include:

  • The Intel Xeon Platinum 8480+ processors have 56 cores, 1.4x more than the previous-generation 40-core Xeon 8380 processors
  • The overall VMmark score is 1.7x higher than the previous generation
  • The tile count is 1.6x higher than the previous generation (each tile consists of 19 VMs)
  • The new VMmark result uses vSphere 8.0, while the previous result used vSphere 7.0
  • Both results used VMware vSAN, and the new result is the first VMmark publication to use vSAN 8
