With 2022 just around the corner, we can’t help but look back at the past year. 2021 was one for the books, as the world continued to navigate the ups and downs of the pandemic and the new way of working. It was also a big year for NSX, with many firsts, releases, awards and events. Before we head into the new year, take a quick trip down memory lane with us for an NSX year in review and reminisce on all the news we shared this year:

January

Shared on YouTube

January, besides marking the start of the new year, was the month of the -tion’s on YouTube. Our top-viewed videos this month were the classic NSX Introduction, Micro-segmentation, Network Evolution, NSX-T Migration, and NSX-T Federation. Check out the videos and let us know in the comments if any of the information in these creations got your attention.

February

Introduced HCX 4.0

Roses are red, violets are blue. Have you heard? HCX 4.0 is new! This major release focused on providing enhanced visibility, reducing service downtime during upgrades, and simplifying the reconfiguration of NSX security policies post-migration. Since February, we have also released HCX 4.1 and 4.2.

March

Hosted Future:NET

In March, we hosted our first-ever virtual Future:NET and expanded our audience across the globe. We were joined by 23 industry luminaries as they debated 22 topics in the span of 4 hours. What a feat! Networking wizards Tom Gillis (VMware), Albert Greenberg (Azure), Nick McKeown (Stanford), Pere Monclus (VMware), Bikash Koley (Google), and Vijoy Pandey (Cisco) kicked off the event by sharing predictions for the near and long term. Check out the opening session to see how their predictions are holding up.

April

All New vmware.com

In April, we unveiled an all-new look and feel on our website for an improved user experience for exploring content and products. You know how parents don’t have a favorite child? That’s how we feel about these pages. So, we won’t pick favorites, but we will tell you to start at the NSX Firewall page or the NSX Datacenter page and go from there.

May

Published 2020 Threat Landscape Report

May we take a moment? In May, we released our first ever Threat Landscape Report. The research presents a clear picture of how attackers evade perimeter detection, infect systems, and then attempt to spread laterally across the network to execute their objective. Read the report or check out a video walkthrough. And stay tuned — the 2021 report is just around the corner.

June

Launched VMware Networking and Security LinkedIn

There was no gloom in our June. This month, we launched the VMware Networking and Security LinkedIn channel, and we couldn’t be more excited about it! We’re posting the latest and greatest news and resources, and we even host the occasional giveaway. You won’t want to miss it – TuneIn on LinkedIn.

And an honorable mention for June: we also posted our funniest Tweet yet.

July

With many geographies off on vacation this month, we held big announcements and got to work preparing for the much-awaited VMworld.

August

Announced HCX 4.2

August updates to HCX 4.2 made it easier to provide an estimate of the time required to complete the relocation phase of every configured vMotion, as well as the time required to complete the transfer phase of every RAV migration. Get the latest on HCX here.

September

Shared Secure Workload Access Report

I find it impossible to think of September without thinking of Earth Wind and Fire’s song – anyone else? No? Just me? Either way: put on some tunes and buckle up, because in September we upped our thought leadership game by sharing this Forrester report on Secure Workload Access On Your Journey To Zero Trust. Read on to learn how to secure workload communications in an increasingly cloud-driven world, protect the edge, and leverage Zero Trust against compliance regimes.

October

Hosted VMworld

October marked this year’s VMworld—our favorite time of the year! Challenged to Imagine That, attendees throughout the week were tasked with radically rethinking how they connect and secure apps and users in a new, highly-distributed modern world. The event kicked off with the always-entertaining Tom Gillis, who outlined VMware’s commitment to simplifying security through automation and ended with practical best practices for implementing VMware security solutions through demos and hands-on labs. We were joined on stage by our customers like AON, Charles Schwab, HSBC, ING, JPMorgan Chase, and so many more. Missed out? Fear not: all the sessions are available for replay.

November

Won Best Network Detection and Response Award From SE Labs

NSX NDR November — try saying that 5 times fast! VMware NSX Network Detection & Response stole the show this month. Shortly after SE Labs awarded VMware the industry’s first NDR AAA rating, SE Labs awarded VMware the Best Network Detection and Response of 2021. Learn more about NDR here and watch it in action here.

December

Announced VMware NSX-T 3.2

Ending the year strong, we announced VMware NSX-T 3.2 — our biggest NSX release to date. It establishes a new marker for securing application infrastructure by introducing significant new features to identify and respond to malware and ransomware attacks in the network, to enhance user identification and L7 application identification capabilities, and, at the same time, to simplify deployment of the product for our customers.

We hope you enjoyed this 2021 NSX rewind and can’t wait for what 2022 has in store.

Before we go, we want to say big thank you to YOU! Whether you’re a loyal NSX customer, an avid reader of our blog, or like our memes on Twitter, your support doesn’t go unnoticed.

Wishing our NSX family a happy, healthy new year. Here’s to making 2022 the best year yet!
