How to Drive Better Visibility into MongoDB

With the rise of the digital economy, NoSQL databases have quickly gained popularity as organizations seek a database that can fit their new data requirements. Among NoSQL databases, MongoDB has quickly grown in popularity because of its scalability, connectivity and responsiveness.

As databases continue to expand beyond the relational database space, Blue Medora continues to grow its offerings to meet the dynamic industry changes. We released the MongoDB Management Pack towards the end of 2016, expanding our database platform extensions to include traditional relational, distributed and now, NoSQL.

The Management Pack for MongoDB is an agentless solution for VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) that extends monitoring for your MongoDB databases so you can dive deeper into key metrics related to your workloads like connections, indexes and page faults. By connecting to specified mongos or mongod instances, the management pack focuses on giving you insight into the specific areas where you need the most visibility to simplify troubleshooting.

In addition, the management pack supports auto discovery and manual discovery of resources. When you enable auto discovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vROps and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vROps, the management pack creates the resource kind.  Configuration of the MongoDB adapter is shown here:

Reporting and Dashboards in the MongoDB Management Pack

With the MongoDB management pack from Blue Medora, gain insight into more than 450 metrics. As a result, you can extend your ability to capture performance and capacity data, relationships and events for resources like MongoDB databases, clusters, mongod and mongos instances, the config server, shards and replica sets.

Beyond access to more metrics, dive deeper into your data points with a series of out-of-the-box dashboards to view these metrics and pinpoint specific issues, including:

  • MongoDB Overview: Access at-a-glance heatmaps depicting the overall health of your MongoDB resources, including mongos instances, databases and shards.
  • MongoDB Health Investigation: Select a current active alert and drill down to key health information and key performance indicators.
  • MongoDB Environment: View health, KPIs and properties information for any resources that you select.
  • MongoDB IOPS: Select a node to view IOPS metrics for that mongos/mongod resource.

 

Within the out-of-the-box dashboards, the user can adjust the configurations of each widget to discover resource specific metrics as well.

If you wish to dig deeper, click the resource in question and access the vROps summary tab for that resource, revealing related objects, alerts and troubleshooting tabs. In turn, you can determine what virtual resources might be tied to your MongoDB resource, such as VMs.
