A VMware Cloud on AWS service for cloud on-boarding, large scale application mobility and infrastructure hybridity.
Today VMware is announcing a preview of VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension service (previously known as HCX technologies) as an add-on service to VMware Cloud on AWS. VMware announced the initial availability of Hybrid Cloud Extension at VMworld 2017 Europe, with VMware’s Cloud Provider partners IBM and OVH.
Hybrid Cloud Extension service will enable customers to adopt the latest and greatest that VMware Cloud on AWS offers, without the need to refactor applications and redo security and compliance architectures. Using Hybrid Cloud Extension service, customers will be able to move applications to VMware Cloud on AWS at scale without any change in IP and any impact to application runtime, performance and reachability.
Data center consolidation with large scale migration
Hybrid Cloud Extension service will enable customers looking at shutting down data centers and consolidating their workloads to VMware Cloud on AWS to save on data center and IT costs and embrace public clouds. Hybrid Cloud Extension service will provide large scale application migration and mobility between legacy VMware vSphere environments (vSphere 5.0+) and VMware Cloud on AWS to support this use case.
Hybrid Cloud Extension will let customers move 100’s of applications from their data centers to VMware Cloud on AWS without any application downtime, application re-factoring and without the need to upgrade/transform their existing vSphere environments. The service will provide secure live migration (secure VMware vMotion), warm migration and cold migration to VMware Cloud on AWS over a WAN optimized hybrid interconnect whilst ensuring business continuity.
Data center extension use case
While customers accelerate and expand their adoption of VMware Cloud on AWS, they still have key IT resources, such as security firewalls, physical storage and databases, compliance and monitoring services etc. on-premises.
Hybrid Cloud Extension will deliver seamless, high-performance connectivity across disparate vSphere-based environments (vSphere 5.0+) and VMware Cloud on AWS. This multi-site hybrid interconnectivity fabric has built in WAN optimization, security, traffic engineering and load balancing – which will create a “hybrid highway” between private data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS. Hybrid Cloud Extension will also support large scale, high throughput Layer 2 network extension over this hybrid interconnect. With this, customers will be able to stretch their own layer 2 network on to VMware Cloud on AWS.
With the combination of the hybrid interconnect and layer 2 extensions, customers will be able to on-board applications to the cloud while remaining tethered to their on-premises data centers. With this service, customers will be able to deploy workloads on VMware Cloud on AWS while having their security enforcement points (such as DMZs, Firewalls etc.), SSO domains, logging/monitoring and a management solutions all on-premises. It will also let customers deploy applications on VMware Cloud on AWS while keeping their storage and database solutions on-premises.
Advancing your cloud strategy with VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension service
Today’s data centers are extending from on premises to the public cloud; VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension Service uniquely enables infrastructure hybridity between them, facilitating application mobility and hybrid architectures across private and public clouds. With today’s announcement, Hybrid Cloud Extension will help extend legacy vSphere cloud infrastructures to VMware Cloud on AWS seamlessly, securely and efficiently. It will be ideally suited for on-boarding and adoption of VMware Cloud on AWS while keeping IT policies, security and governance in place.
