As a growing company with many mergers and acquisitions, Sapiens, a global provider of software solutions for the insurance industry, struggled to merge disparate IT infrastructures into its primary data center. Combining local data centers from each acquisition to the main data center in Israel involved a time-consuming, expensive process compounded by risks and required Sapiens to invest heavily in managing and maintaining its data center.
To address these pains, Sapiens searched for a solution that would reduce the burden on operations, improve its agility, and enable it to focus on core business outcomes. To accomplish these goals, Sapiens migrated eleven on-premises data centers in the U.S. and India to VMware Cloud on AWS. They thereby realized 20-30% savings on IT expenses with increased flexibility and scalability of their development environments, and double-digit improvement in performance, enhancing the company’s competitiveness.
Choosing VMware Cloud on AWS for scale and flexibility
Sapiens struggled to merge disparate IT infrastructures from their many mergers and acquisitions, a challenge that was amplified by their fast growth. In addition, they needed new infrastructure to support employees who were required to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. And they realized that moving to the cloud would also help them accommodate unpredictable loads with increased scalability and flexibility.
In this project, carried out by VMware partner Matrix CloudZone, they moved more than 2,000 servers that support over 1,000 developers. They seamlessly migrated 10 data centers in the U.S. and 1 data center in India to the cloud. They leveraged VMware HCX to ensure a smooth process without interrupting the development process. With VMware Cloud on AWS, the Sapiens team did not spend time refactoring or re-architecting their applications to move them to the cloud, saving significant time and resources.
Results in agility and improved business performance and competitiveness
Sapiens gained unprecedented agility with VMware Cloud on AWS, enabling the company to scale resources, integrate competitive technologies, launch new products more quickly, and improve business performance.
“We found that VMware Cloud on AWS is financially the most cost-effective solution since payment is based on use of the physical server and not per virtual machine,” says Almog Nissim, Global Systems Manager at Sapiens. “Today, Sapiens enjoys comprehensive savings of 20–30 percent on IT expenses because we have less need than before for the hardware maintenance activities, electricity, communications, office space, and human resources that data center maintenance involves.”
The new cloud infrastructure will support the company’s rapid growth, which is both organic and through mergers and acquisitions. In addition, the new cloud environment also sustains employees required to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic by enabling remote access to workloads previously managed in person. With this move to VMware Cloud on AWS, Sapiens benefits from reduced costs and increased flexibility of its development environment, yielding a double-digit improvement in performance and making Sapiens more competitive.
“A huge challenge, which we faced whenever we merged the data center of an acquired company with the Sapiens infrastructure, is now gone as though it never existed,” says Nissim. “In the future, Sapiens can quickly integrate the information systems and development environments of additional acquisitions into a uniform infrastructure.”
