Back in November at AWS re:Invent, we announced that VMware Cloud on AWS is launching a new instance type – m7i.metal-24xl. Today we are extremely happy to announce that a m7i.metal-24xl instance type is now generally available for VMware Cloud on AWS.
This marks a significant milestone, showcasing an innovative architectural breakthrough where we break the hard link between compute and storage. Customers now have the flexibility to independently scale their compute and storage options as business needs change. Customers can choose two external storage options including Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP and VMware Cloud Flex Storage.
The m7i instance type fits nicely into the existing VMware Cloud on AWS hardware portfolio by providing an attractive option for smaller and price sensitive customers.
Let’s look at the regional availability, key specifications and use cases for the new M7 instance type.
Regional Availability:
The m7i.metal-24xl is now generally available across 5 AWS regions: US East (N. Virginia), US- East (Ohio), US-West (Oregon), EU (Ireland) and EU (Stockholm). And we will be expanding regional availability across other regions in coming months.
Key Specifications:
- An Amazon EC2 m7i.metal-24xl instance is powered by custom 4th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (code named Sapphire Rapids) with an all-core turbo frequency up to 3.8 GHz. The 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors feature Intel® Accelerator Engines designed to accelerate performance across the fastest-growing workloads. With Advance Matrix Extensions accelerator, it accelerates matrix multiplication operations for deep learning (DL) inference and training workloads*.
- It offers:
- 48 physical cores, 96 logical cores with Hyper Threading enabled.
- 384 GiB memory
- Up to 37.5 Gbps networking speed
- It supports always-on memory encryption using Intel Total Memory Encryption (TME) to check on the network encryption between instances
- Support for end-to-end network traffic encryption between instances
Use Cases:
- Entry Level SDDC: M7i instance type is perfect cost-effective option for entry level smaller SDDC deployments, management clusters and isolated workloads.
- Additional Use Cases:
- AI/ML Workloads: With 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with Advanced Matrix Extensions accelerators, customers can use M7i instance type for AI/ML workloads such as Inference Testing, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning etc.
- General Purpose Workloads: M7i instance type is perfect for general purpose workloads such as general purpose enterprise IT workloads, management services, MS SQL server, database backends etc.
- Ransomware and Disaster Recovery: Based on future availability and support of DR solutions on M7i, customers will be able to use M7i for modern ransomware recovery, next-gen DR, compliance and risk management etc.
