Today, VMware Cloud on AWS is helping more and more customers across different industries and different geographies in accelerating their hybrid cloud journey.
In this blog, we would like to share some of the experiences of customers using the service across different use cases, their outcomes, how VMware Cloud on AWS helped them overcome the challenges of migrating to hybrid cloud, and much more.
Check out Part 2 and Part 3 of this series to learn about some more customer stories across variety of use cases
Let’s start with our first success story.
Stagecoach
Stagecoach is a leading public transport company in the UK that runs over 11,000 trains and buses – transporting over 3 million passengers a day, with 699 million journeys a year in the UK alone, and with 99.5% reliability.
They wanted to migrate their business-critical applications to the cloud to provide flexibility, agility and scalability, but at the same time, they wanted to ensure application resiliency. And they had tight time constraints for this migration project.
Stagecoach used VMware Cloud on AWS for this rapid migration of mission critical applications to the cloud and within just 3 weeks, the environment was up and running.
Here is what Stagecoach has to say about their experience of using the service:
“Since moving to VMware Cloud I’m worrying less about operational uptime. There is a certainty, an assurance that everything works. Also, we feel we’re at the forefront of technology. There are additional features coming online every month.”
– Sam Akroyd, Technical Services Manager, Stagecoach Bus

TrendMicro
Trend Micro protects 500,000+ companies with its Smart Protection Network that processes hundreds of terabytes of data every day to produce critical global threat intelligence to protect over 250 million unique endpoints worldwide.
TrendMicro needed to ensure its IT infrastructure could scale to support both core product growth and new business opportunities. In order to address the scalability issue, they wanted to move to the public cloud, but at the same time, they do not wanted to avoid the risk and complexity of managing resources split across on-premises and the cloud.
With VMware Cloud on AWS, they were able to quickly migrate workloads to the public cloud with on-demand expansion and no impact to application uptime. Here is what they had to say about the migration experience:
“We have an amazing team with cloud backgrounds, but transforming existing enterprise apps into cloud native equivalents is extremely difficult. Even for our private cloud apps, migrating them to public cloud presented risks if they were not carefully re-platformed and re-tested. VMware Cloud on AWS coupled with Trend Micro Deep Security smooths that out, saving us months of time and thousands of man hours.”
– Zack Milem, Cloud Solutions Architect, TrendMicro

Dell Technologies
Dell Technologies World is the premier annual conference sponsored by Dell Technologies, offering thousands of breakout sessions, trend-leading keynotes, and a comprehensive solutions expo.
For this event, Dell needed a temporary infrastructure that could scale to support 28,000 VMs for 3,900 Hands-on Lab environments during four day event. To address this need for temporary burst capacity, the Dell Technologies World IT team turned to a hybrid cloud model. This enabled the team to seamlessly transfer content between a short-term VMware Cloud on AWS environment and three private clouds. They supported a massive burst in capacity, with 40% more VMs than the previous year’s event, and achieved 100% content uptime, compared to 90% in previous year.
This is what they had to say about their hybrid cloud experience of using VMware Cloud on AWS:
“The terrific experience that VMware Cloud on AWS helps provide translates to higher customer confidence in our products and solutions, preserving and enhancing revenue opportunities for the company.”
– Tricia Kreis, Senior Manager of Events and Operations for Customer Solution Centers, Dell Technologies

George Sink Law Firm
One of the largest personal-injury law firms in the Southeast, George Sink, P.A. is based in Charleston, South Carolina.
They wanted a cloud-based disaster recovery solution because their Capital costs for on-premises DR solution were adding up, and the firm didn’t have the staff necessary to maintain the resources they would need going forward. Also, with storms in the region strengthening in recent years, the on-premises facility was not safe as a DR site.
The researched about some DR solutions in the cloud and chose VMware Cloud on AWS because they did not wanted to retrain their staff or learn new skills as they were using vSphere 6.7 on-premises for their production instance.
This is what they have to say about their experience:
“For a cost of a good engineer, we got four nodes in the cloud, which is a no brainer. VMware Cloud on AWS not only prevents me from making tremendous cash outlays for data centers every time we choose to expand, it allows me to plan. If I divide my monthly expenditure with AWS over a number of compute users, I can almost boil it down to a per-person cost to have my infrastructure running. That’s something that you’ve never been able to do with on-prem because nobody takes into account bandwidth, backups, hard drives, personnel costs, all of that.”
– Tim Mullen, CIO, George Sink Law Firm

NHS Digital
NHS Digital is a national provider of information, data and IT systems for commissioners, analysts and clinicians in health and social care in England, particularly those involved with the National Health Service.
They wanted a hybrid cloud platform that could provide scale, agility and resiliency to support digitally-enabled care today and in the future. They chose VMware Cloud on AWS to support their digital transformation journey.
Here is what they had to say about their experience:
“We choose the right cloud for each workload, and VMware Cloud on AWS is the absolute best option for running our vSphere-based environments in the cloud. It’s easy to move solutions across the different environments and it’s easy to run and manage. We built a virtual data center in the AWS cloud in less than three hours. That speed and agility is just what we need to harness innovation and make the best digital services available for the NHS and social care sector,”
– Michael Flintoft, Associate Director, Platforms and Infrastructure, NHS Digital.

United Overseas Bank
United Overseas Bank Limited (UOB) is a leading bank in Asia, with a global network of more than 500 offices in 19 countries and territories in Asia Pacific, Western Europe and North America. The bank has started using VMware Cloud on AWS to extend their on-premises environment to the cloud, in order to build a hybrid cloud infrastructure.
Here is what they had to say about their experience of using the service:
“As we continue to develop and to implement services and solutions to enhance our customers’ banking experiences, it is important that we have the capability to be agile without compromising on security. VMware Cloud on AWS enables us to build our innovation platform on the cloud while maintaining our robust security standards. We are pleased to be the first company in Southeast Asia to use this integrated solution to power our innovation drive.”
– Adhunik Chug, Head of Group Shared Infrastructure Services, Group Technology and Operations, UOB

Cenitex
Cenitex is a leading innovator in enterprise software, and is the Victorian Government’s shared services ICT agency. They are working together to deliver new cloud-based solutions to better support over 35,000 public servants across over 21 government departments and portfolio agencies.
Cenitex wants to reduce its physical data center footprint, with improved scalability and continuous expansion capabilities into the cloud and for that. As they were running VMware solutions on-premises for 10 years, and they do not want to refactor or re-architect applications running on their existing on-premises environment while moving to the cloud, VMware Cloud on AWS was a no-brainer for them for their hybrid cloud transformation.
